    Gov't Recalls All Segway Scooters

The maker of the Segway Human Transporter has agreed to recall the motorized scooters because riders have been injured falling off when its batteries are low.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Friday, saying that three people had been injured. One suffered a head wound and needed stitches.

The recall involves about 6,000 of the single-rider, two-wheeled scooters that can travel up to 12 mph. The scooter uses gyroscopes to keep it upright, making it less likely to fall or be knocked over.

But the CPSC said that scooters being operated with low battery power may not have enough power to remain upright, causing the rider to fall.

The Segway was unveiled in December 2001 to much fanfare by Dean Kamen, an inventor who holds some 100 patents, including a wheelchair that climbs stairs and the first portable kidney dialysis machine.

Commercial and consumer models on the list include the Segway HT i167 (i series), the e167 (e series) and p133 (p series).

The scooters cost around $4,950 apiece.

The company is offering a free software upgrade. While Segway plans to contact owners, consumers also may call the company toll free at 1-877-889-9020 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. weekdays to obtain the free upgrade.

The Segway is available online through Amazon.com, as well as from authorized dealers and the company itself. In afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, shares of Amazon.com Inc. were down 97 cents, or 1.9 percent, to $49.08.

The first time I saw one I thought they looked quite stupid. Also considering all the hype they put out for year before it came out, I was expecting something alot more useful.

Yes, but think of it as a second car, or in 10 years down to $500 each.

You can not buy a car for $5000, and no gas bills.

When humanoid robots get a little smarter, I get alot richer and a segway, I would love to see my robot riding the segway.

    That is what I want.

Those things always make me laugh, they just look silly. They look like one of those they have in a film set in the future that you know we wont haev. They make you look like you are too lazy to walk, even if they are environmentally friendly and faster than the average traffic speed in London.
If it is a simple software upgrade, then the company will be over this soon.

I was lucky enough to have a go on one at a promo event a couple of weeks back, and I have to say they're very easy to use. $5,000 is a bit steep, but in time they'll come down (hopefully!).

I wouldnt buy one of those things lol. I think a bike is better its more sensible. I would even buy a propelled gas scooter or electric scooter.

for 5000 dollars that is very expensive.
instead what i would do with that is take the bus, train and walk and invest that 5000 dollars for something more worthwhile like a real car. or i would pay off debt or something.

I dont think i would use it cuz it would be a traffic nightmare and then people would start using it on the sidewalks to and mind you sometimes people can pass out to and it could cause a collision in the streets. i mean if you follow the traffic laws u would be ok. but the price is to stiff and where are u suspose to park it? u know someone would steal it.

    hmm

Yeah, it's so nice not to have the headache of a car. I never realized that until I moved here - you take a train/bus/subway everywhere. It saves $ and time in the mornings. It also sucks to wake up and drive in snow, ice and traffic. But i dunno if a scooter would handle the snow very well :)

maybe bush (gov) doesnt like them becsue he fell of one and hit his head(not the first time). they are not free you have to plug them in and in order to make the electricity that most of us use (not solar or wind people) you loose 70% of the energy in the process of boilding water with nuke energy to make turbines spin , so the cost is not neglagable compared to a car
as far as the last post and public tranist, i do 12 miles each way. the bus costs more to take than it would take gas by 1.6X and it takes 4 - 5 times longer to get to work. i can ride my bike and beat the bus by 30 min , save my buck 25 and avoid obeasity
thou i would like to have a hybrid natural gas converted engine to plug onto my old 1950's car i drive.

    I'd rather bike...

You can't do tricks on a fucking Segway...and besides I like actually using my own power to... ding ding... move my own body!

I can't run as fast as one of those things without getting winded, but I sure as hell can blow past it on a bike...

I think they're pretty cool, but this first generation is expensive to offset all the R&D money spent into developing them.

And yeah, bikes are way faster. But bikes are also way more dangerous. I loved my bike, but I got rid of it anyway, because you are extremely vulnerable on a motorcycle. A blowout on a car is trivial, but can kill you on a bike. A fender bender in a car can leave you dead on a bike. Now that I've made it out of my 20s, what can I say, I wanna live as long as possible now and the best way to achieve that is by eliminating unnecessary risks. I no longer have that invulnerable feeling I had when I was younger - seen too many people hurt or killed to believe I am somehow immune. I have a friend with a prosthetic hand now because of a motorcycle accident, caused by someone else, and that accident would have been trivial in a car. It doesn't matter how good a rider YOU are - your safety is largely in the hands of others. On a bike, that's not a good allocation of risk.

Jonny, if you're speaking to me...

Yes I've driven a few and yes even at 15-20mph you can end up spraying brain across the road. Last time I hopped on one I damn near killed myself by getting over confident and pushing past 90.... I'll never ride one again as a jolt of adrenaline that large may kill me before the bike actually wipes out...lol

In any case I was talking about a normal bike, powered by muscle an gear, not gas...

Had a peg snap on me before...probably could fuck yourself up pretty bad on a normal bike too. :wings

my motor bike will beat the bus by an hour. and boy it's fun to live wild. being able to achive 130mph and do 50-75 mpg is not bad and insurance of 9 bucks a month sure beats 175bucks (they figure you can only kill yourself)

maybe you shouldn't file share if your eliminating risk ;) jonny
