What Does the Porn Industry Think About Filesharing?

The music and movie industry are not happy with filesharers, and we hear about it. What about the porn industry? Tons of commercial porn files are shared. Why don't we hear from them?

Do they look on it as advertising? Do they lack organization? Are they just not interested?

They can't make too much noise, because it would rob the legitimacy of the anti-filesharing movement. Would that make them completely neutral? I doubt it.

If I was the porn industry what I would do would be to anonymously finance companies like media enforcer that launch digital attacks against filesharers. Also I would launch a fileshare company, and use it to record information such as IP numbers and what files are the most heavily traded. I would feed that information to the music and movie industry (perhaps at a price).

If such an operation was in practice there would be one immediate clue. The music and movie industry would leave it alone.

The porn guys are primarily still interested in people making money off their content, this is a huge enough problem to keep them busy for years.

I think people (common, everyday people) care more about porn, than about music. The thing is, that the porn industry is not mainstream, it still tabu, and doesnt have such big supporters as the music industry does, or at least not as rich.

Nobody would take the sex industry seriously if they were the ones going after downloaders, because there are no big corporations behind them, im almost sure the porn industry makes more money than the music industry, but the goverment is still affraid of sex and sex is affraid of goverment, therefore we might never hear about porn fighting filesharers.

Or maybe they are just waiting to see if the RIAA wins, then they can just sue away, without getting their hands dirty and without all the bad publicity...... hmm free distribution too

Someone is already being subpeanaed by the porn industry for their identity so action can be levied against them. It was in a news release but not mentioned near as much as the riaa's actions. There is no telling whats in store for that person, but it will be much more embarasing for porn users if their activities get publicized and there employer or friends find out.:hole

The problem with the porn industry is that it has neither political backing (which politian will accept campaign contributions openly from the porn industry and support its legal actions?) nor the thin illusion of the a high moral ground the RIAA maintains for now.

I think the porn industry was used as an example of the good of p2p in a zeropaid article - I will try to find it. Basically it said that the porn industry were uploading free clips onto kazaa, with their website address at the end. The article went on to say that if the porn industry can make p2p a business oppotunity, then the RIAA could as well.
The difference is that the porn industry is a competitive market.

Also, the porners that were subpoenaing Kazaa users under the DMCA were a gay porn company. I can't remember the name of the company, and I don't have the link on hand (and isn't that the way... can't find what ya need till ya don't need it). However, I do remember that those fifty subpoenas were among a group that PacBell was fighting a month or so ago.

Alot of porn out there are still clips of things that advertise the full version. The biggest problem is kiddy porn, that is terrible.

The porn industry is huge, and it is bleeding money because of p2p. They just happen to have the problem that when they lose money your average person thinks that's a good thing, and that's not likely to change. If THEY took people to court, the juries would be more apt to be sympathetic with the sharers than they are when it's some mainstream movie studio and their employees losing money, or some poor musician losing money. So, they are, for the most part, letting the other industries fight the battle FOR them. The MPAA will be their primary front man, but the MPAA is itself currently letting the RIAA fight the battle.

As for kiddie porn, it is terrible. But as we speed toward truly anonymous networks, where the RIAA cannot pinpoint a specific sharer, one consequence of that will be that the it will be just as impossible to pinpoint who are the purveyors of kiddie porn, which will bring them more out in the open and, probably, proliferate the act itself to some degree.

The price of safe (even if still illegal) music copying could very well be paid by additional children who become victims of the child porn industry. That won't stop anonymous networks from appearing, of course, and the good that can be done with anonymous networks outweighs the bad, but it's still something to think about.

Anonymous networks may lead to an increase in kiddie porn, but the mere posssession of it is still a crime. These wackos eventually screw up, get caught, and name any and all involved to save their own necks. The mere chance of abuse should not deter the construction of anonymous nets. Non-criminal users outnumber criminals, and we should not have to suffer because of a criminal minority.

I know that Vivid (a porn video company) supports filesharing because more people find out about them. I think that even if the porn industry were against p2p, it would be hard to fight it because they don't have a conglomerate (like the RIAA is to many music companies) to represent them.
