To be fair, he only modified the original blaster worm to create the W32.Blaster.B variant which was not very widespread. The original worm creator has yet to be arrested, as well as the creator of the C variant. Both of these were far more prevailant than the B variant.

I don't understand why they have to bring up his obesity or social status in high school. He modified a virus and got caught because he was an amature. Please explain to me why he has to be humiliated for something totally different ?

Yeah I know, it was more of a rhetorical question.

    He lives close to me.

I agree with Moony, why does his social status and appearance have anything to do with what he did?

I must agree that 10 years is rather preposterous. He modified a worm......He was a script kiddie. I in no way am condoning what he did, but I would think that the actual creator would receive a sentence of 10 years, not someone who merely exploits it. Again, I am not condoning this type of behavior in any way whatsoever, just disagree in terms of the monetary fines and sentence.

I think the bigger message is: Fix your software m$. This was an annoyance at best. It didn't destroy computer data or cause your hardware to malfunction. He caused no bodily harm to anyone. I realize it costs millions of dollars to fix and was quite detrimental to businesses. An idiot.....many would argue yes......a criminal who deserves a felony count that carries 10 years in prison? Purely absurd IMHO.
To all my freaks out there: HOLLA if ya hear me.

I can be characterized as the smartest dumbass and the dumbest smartass.

10 years does seem a bit excessive. I'd like to slap him once or twice. But 10 years? No.

The Govt needs someone as a scapegoat so they can convince the American sheeple they are on top of things. The funny thing is that they would have never found him if he didn't put his fingerprint and name of everything. And don't let Asscroft get a hold of him or he'll be facing the death penalty.

All in all I still have a hard time understanding why a car manufacturer has to fix its defects at their expense but Microsoft can charge you 10 dollars, at your expense, to ship you a CD that 'fixes' the problem. At the most, to ship a cd out in a cardbord sleeve would cost is 57 cent by mail

As far such cases go its not as much the issue of the punishment fitting the crime but making an example. The method of thinking (I am not sure it has been very successful though) is the prevent further activities from younger hackers by setting up someone as the token example.

They can (and probably will in this case) always argue the 10 years would equate the financial damages and such that companies and institutions suffered as a resault of the the spread of the worm.

Anyway you look at it young Parson is screwed (no pun intended).

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".

    New Twist

There is a new twist in the story. He claims he was helping the Govt catch the originator of the Blaster virus. Looks like Asscroft tried to catch him in a trap and the trap is starting to backfire on his Asscroft!
