replacing tapes

I have 50 or so tapes still kicking around. I never replaced them with CD's because it sort of galled me to pay for music I'd already bought once.

As someone who's tried to write and get a book published, I suppose I have some qualms about downloading music. It does cut the artist out of a potential royalty. Some big stars don't need this but most do.

On the other hand, I can see how downloading can help and artist. I've downloaded a few songs here and there by bands I didn't really know, and ended up likely them enough to go and buy thier CD.

Ideally of course, I'd like to see a system evolve where I could get the music directly from the artist and cut out the middle men.

In any case, getting back to the tapes. I've been thinking recently about downloading the music I have on the tapes.

Has any sort of legal finding evolved yet concerning this sort of thing? To my way of thinking, I've already bought the rights to the song once. Why should I buy them again.

Any insights or thoughts?

The legal question is still iffy but there's good precedent, it will turn out to have been fine.

More importantly, no one is getting in trouble for downloading now, only for sharing.
