    AMD vs Intel

I am getting a new computer probally tommorow

    EMACHINES
    AMD Xp 2400
    256 ddr
    80 gig
    16x dvd
    48x cdrw

    489.97 + tax

    or a
    COMPAQ
    PEntium 4 2.2 gig
    256 ddr
    80 gig
    16x dvd
    48x cdrw
    549.99

    both with 17 inch monitors

I am going to be using this computer for both games and for school. Id like to save the money but I was worried that WIndows2003 server wouldnt like the amd.

Any information on amd or pentium4 that might influence my decision would be helpful.

Does the AMD have L2 cache?

If Im not giving enogth info let me know and I will update the post.

ANd If these prices seem outrageous let me know of a place to buy a computert cheaper.

    Thank You

If I had the choice between those two, I'd go for the eMachines. However you didn't give any information on the graphics/video cards. I'm guessing that they're either integrated or low-end models.

Personally, I'd build one myself. It isn't as hard as you might think, and it can be significantly cheaper. If you have any parts from an old PC that you won't be using, you can use those too!

Compaq USE to use better parts....Emachines has always sucked in that respect...

Build if you have the brains/skills to do so...it's not that hard.

And go with XP.... XP 2400 means it's like a P4 2.4ghz chip even though it's running at 2ghz.

The reason behind this is on Intel...the P4 does (just a easy number here...it's a lot higher) 3 things in one clock cycle while the XP does 4....so mhz ratings mean dick when Intel chooses to fuck with comsumer minds by jumping ISO ship on the P4....

I will give my opinion for what it's worth. I find that AMD, at this point in time, gives you more bang for your $$. I know that with some of their processors though, cooling has been an issue. I will also add that emachines often come with lower end, on board video cards that suck up memory. A friend I work with couldn't understand why she only had 480 mb of memory, when she had paid for 512 mb...I rest my case. I forgot to mention all the garbage that comes with their pre-installed OS too. Just make sure it has everything you want from a computer. If you like gaming, then a graphics card is key. As CCSDUDE and nasrules mentioned, I would certainly try building your own machine. It's NOT hard and would give you the most dollar value.
