Hi all
I am currently using a dialup connection and thinking seriously to upgrade for ADSL but i am not encouraged - why?
coz although i am connected with the dailup modem @ 45 Kbps and my maximum upload speed is 32 Kbps, i NEVER reached the 45 K download limit and the 32 K upload limit - yea never. The ADSL package i am going to use someday is 256/64 but i am quite sure that neither i 'll get the 64 K upload speed nor the 256 K download speed BUT WHY THIS HAPPENS ??? i.e. Why the declared speeds are quite different from the reality and is this a way by which ISPs save some bandwidth and hence costs for themsleves or they like to fool us coz most of us are not so technical geeks who can know such deeper info and secrets about what’s going on in their PCs ??? - i don't understand really
P.S. I know the reality about my actual upload and download speeds by using a program which is called "Du Meter" which is a quite accurate program for measuring the speed flowing from/to yr PC
Another question: which is the most reliable ADSL chipset: “Conexant 3805” or “ITeX Apollo 2”
Will be Very thankful for any ideas and suggestions and advices

There are several factors that inflenuce the speed of ADSL.
1) The distance from the ISP node. The further you are from the node the slower your speed is.
2) Interference from the phone line.
3) Your windows settings may not be correct.
Go to DSLreports and run the tweak test.
Download and run DRTCP to change your Windows values based on the results from the tweak test.
The main reason for not getting the rated KB/s is less to do with nerdy phone wire technology and more to do with the upload capacity of the server used to download files.
You are misguided about the speeds so let me break it down for you.Originally posted by eXTREME2002

When you say you are connected at 45kbps that means 45 Kilo BITS per second. That is roughly about 5 or 6 KiloBytes a second. Also your upload speed and download speed are affected by each other. If you are uploading a file at 4K/s, I guarrentee you that your download will be at about 2K/s (again this is Kilobytes not bits).
With ADSL your speed is most likely 1500/500Kbps (kilobits)... meaning you should be able to have a steady download of 120KB/s (kilobytes). Your upload should be about 60 K/s.
Oh and what the hell is an ADSL chipset ?? I'm not too familar with DSL so that may be why I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
edit: If it seems like I am talking out of my ass, I blame it on the emachine.

Pick up a phone and listen. Is your phone line crackling or noisy?
Do you have water in a junction box somwhere? Do you have six extensions, three cordless phones and a fax plugged into the same line?
If you try to sign up for ADSL you line will usually be test first to see if it is clean enough to work.
i have ADSL
i am lucky to be getting exactly what is promissed, and yes i here crackling sounds in phone other bullshit mentioned...
biggest reason is that what is not shared is the ratio
ur 256 even as they say is comited it is not as the ratio can be like 4:1 that is if all 4 users log in the bandwidth gets divided.
ask for this ratio and u have a fair idea of what speeds u can expect.
id go with cable - I had dsl and fastest it went was 80 kb/s down & 25 kb/s up
now im on cable and have 280- 320 kb/s down and 30-45 kb/s up
but live fairly close to my cable company & was far from my phone company
