    Used scanner

I just picked up a used scanner, a Microtek ScanMaker4,
Model MRS-1200TP, and the newest drivers I can find are for windows 98. As I am running XP are their any tips as to how I can install this critter?

I don't know Hunter. I recently got a new scanner. It came with an installation cd. I would try contacting the maker. Maybe such a cd exists for this machine. But you probably already thought of this.

Hope you have better luck than I did when I bought a new computer that had XP on it. No way I could make my 3 year old HP scanner match up.....had to buy a new one that XP could tolerate.

Well I was to the makers site, and the latest drivers are for 98, and as I am running duel boot with 98, I can install it, but I would have prefirred to use XP if possible. It is no big deal, as I got it and a unused dell keyboard for $30.

Is there also software installed to go along with the scanner? If there is look for the executable files and right click on them and select 'compatability' and choose to run them under windows 98/me mode. I don't know if this will work or not It's all I could think of at the moment. Hope it helps.

There is no reference to this model, not even at the Microtek site.

    Try this,

    http://support.microtek.com/~admin/ts-sm4.htm

    Download Current ScanWizard Driver >

    Windows XP >

DSL, cable modem, or LAN >

Microtek ScanWizard 2.60 For Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Thanks a lot, and I will give it a try as soon as I get things set up. Just a thought, and I know its a dumb one, but I wonder if I should let XP try and detect it, and see what it finds.

    Another alternative

If that doesn't work Hunter you can try this

    Talking

Thanks bud, and I am going to give that a try in a bit. First I got to get a truss, after lifting that bloody scanner. That is one big, heavy mofo.

I've installed old Microtek scanners before.

Driver support is real iffy on their web site, but they do work in XP.

Krell's link is the correct driver.
    ftp://ftp.microtek.com/microtek/pcfiles/sw260.exe
You can find it by going to microtekusa.com > support > windows scanners > then find ScanMaker 4 in the ScanMaker dropdown list > Windows driver > Windows XP.

After you install the driver you still might see "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. Just right-click on it, choose Properties, and have it search for its driver.

It should end up listed under Imaging Device in Device Manager.

Ok, I just got home so it will be a bit before I give it a go. I was trying to get the manual for it, but it is among the missing for now. This could be interesting, as I never used a scanner before.

Once you get the driver installed you can get the hang of scanning through trial & error.

In Photoshop, click File > Import > Microtek ScanWizard.

Move & resize the selection rectangle so you just scan the part you want to keep. Don't have to be too precise, you can always crop later.

If you scan a magazine or newspaper you need to use a Descreen filter.

If you want good enough quality to print, 300 dpi is a good target to aim for. You need more dpi if you enlarge a pic when you print. For pics you're just gonna gonna look at on screen or post on the Web, use the standard of 72 dpi.
