If you do get infected, you can also use this virus remover tool to take care of it.

Run > Services.msc > Crypto > Properties > Manual/Automatic (either way) > Hit start and wait till it loads...

    Run the update...

Try killing crypto off restarting then setting it to automatic and restarting again.

If you get squat...then my guess is the files needed for the service are fucked...

Check out the SMART info on your HDD....if you got failures/ect then it's obvious something is up..

Donno what to tell ya...could try installing XP OVER the old install to replace files...but all I have to say about that is..BACK UP EVERYTHING YOU WISH TO SAVE!

If thats your only system..only HD...only HD with an OS on it...your fucked to a certain extent if XP's setup crashes on you...(it'll crash...you restart...then it'll boot right back into setup...crash again...boot discs don't seem to help..least from my end)

You could always download a copy of Knoppix Linux and boot off CD then use it's KB3 burner app you save your data...so if you don't back up at least have a copy of that burned to disc via the ISO..(don't just burn the ISO on a disc..lol)

Download the removal tool first here. Then Redownload the patch. Shut off your internet connection and run the removal tool then the patch. If the patch still doesn't work, restart and try it again. If it applies, re enable your internet.

Install XP Service pack 1 again. This will most likely fix any issues, no need to try and reinstall XP.

If I remember right SP1 uses crypto too...lol I did a service cleanup before SP1 and it wouldn't install for me.

If you are still having probs try this....

    Start -> run

Type in cmd and hit enter to go to DOS

    net stop cryptsvc

    ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

    net start cryptsvc

Type exit to close the DOS window.

Then try the patch. Let us know how you get on.

    Incase he doesn't get that...

Bloke just told ya to open a DOS prompt kill the crypto service then rename the folder 'catroot2' to 'oldcatroot2' then re-enable crypto...

Another way to do this would be..

    Run > Services.msc > Disable crypto
    Browse to System32
    Rename cat(alog)root2 to something else
Back to services > Re-enable crypto

Just thought I'd cover that as some are a tad 'freaked' about just typing in commands without understanding what they do.

Oh and welcome to ZP Average_Bloke. :)
