Turn off Messenger by going to start>run> then type "services.msc" (without the quotes)
Right click on the entry listed as "Messenger" and select properties.
From there, you should see a pulldown menu (box) labeled "Startup type:", set it to "disabled".
Hit "apply" then "ok" .
You can't triple stamp a double stamp.
I have a couple of questions for you.
#1. Is the XP software you installed off a factory cd?
#2. What are the pop-ups saying? You say they are supposedly part of XP? Are they advertisements?
#3. How long after you install did the pop ups start?
Anything else you could mention that might be useful information?
EDIT:: I'm probably on the wrong track... Just ignore my post if Ken's solution works for ya.

He's on the right track as usual, he's answered this question before.
I would add one thing, for the umteen billionth time, go to blackviper.com, follow the XP Serives list he has, and go thru things one at a time. I doubt that this is the only thing that needs addressing..
