    The New Apple G5

What do you think of it

The new 64-bit PowerPC G5 processor Jointly developed by Apple and IBM, the PowerPC G5 drives the largest gain in processing power in the history of the PowerPC architecture.

The Power Mac G5 is the world’s fastest personal computer and the first with a 64-bit processor — which means it breaks the 4 gigabyte barrier and can use up to 8 gigabytes of main memory. The new G5 processor — available at speeds up to dual 2GHz with a new ultrahigh-bandwidth system architecture featuring AGP 8X and PCI-X — makes the Power Mac G5 a breakthrough in desktop processing power. And models start at just $1999.

some pics of the NEW Apple G5.

    Sounds cool

Looks like an awesome system, but hardware/software is still more expensive for the mac, and there are less programs and hardware available for the platform. (The one thing that pisses me off about the Mac the most is no taskbar to switch icons, dont know if this chance in OS X tho)

I will personally wait for the AMD 64-bit PC chip later this year, and stick with Windows and Linux thank you.

And really who the hell needs more than a GB of memory anyway? U really need 8 GB of mem in the computer??

Well I must confess, I havent used Apple since OS7.

It was alright, crashed alot, but then secretly took a 2 hr demo on Jaguar @ Fry's and love it.

Apple is excellent, my Apple2E I have in storage crashed less than Windows 95.

But I'm on XP right now, dont ask me why, I just cant take the plunge, yet.
My current setup stats (like anyone cares...):

    ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard
    AMD 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
    Windows Vista (Ultimate 32bit)
2 GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS RAM
2x250 GB (in RAID 0) HDDs
EVGA GeForce 7950 GTX 512 MB
    Creative X-FI Fatal1ty XtremeGamer

    Also sporting a black MacBook
    Revision/Release 1
    Upgraded to 2GB RAM.

Apple invented firewire, which is worlds ahead of USB.

    Apple also invented user friendliness.

Besides that, 64 bit chips can theoretically take up to 8 terabytes of RAM or something. They are definately the way of the future, Apple got there first as always, but as always it was no surprise that it was bound to happen. (iTunes music store etc.).

The chip is immensely faster than anything else, but the Athlon 64 is coming out in a few weeks and hopefully it'll be able to stay in the ring.

As for Apple software being too expensive, that's an absolute lie, to get iMovie, iDVD, and iPhoto, you are looking at a whopping $30 retail. Apple works comes with the system I believe. Now looking at software for windows...

    Office XP Pro $600
    Pinnacle Video Studio $100
    DVDit! $200

Right there, you're looking at spending 30 times more, and that's not even including a photo program like iPhoto.

Apple hardware? Most hardware is now compatible with both Mac and Windows. My Western Digital 120gb hard drive I just bought for example, my optical mouse, my boston accoustics speakers, my HP 952c printer, even my monitor I could use on a Mac system. The only thing I'd need different would be a processor (the G5 is better than any PC processor) a mobo, sound and video card. And those are approx. the same price or maybe like $30 more, but pretty incosequential when you compare that to how much you're saving on software.
People on my "cool list" in no particular order.

Krell, Phalkon30, Ken17625, Triniti, Kyle06, Potato429, wessman, Winphuk, Woflie, MoonMan, All the mods, CCSDUDE, Lamourlady, Nasrules, Alannah777, vipp, foreverboard, NDGAARONDI, metale, isus, Endersgame21, Reg0232, notbob, Janett999, and uhh you!

or you can buy cheap hardware and download all the software you want for free

apple is on top, for now, but it will be a bittersweet short stay.

p.s. they still lack a 64 bit os, they only have an "optimized 32" so any advantage is merely cosmetic

    Well..

Well so the truth comes out...

By looking at this article, the Athlon 64 will blow the G5 out of the water.

The opteron blows it out of the water, as does the P4, especially when the hyper-threading ISN'T disabled.

lol psilaxs. spl's soapbox. hmm, wonder where the whole idea for the name soapbox came from?

btw, apple didn't invent firewire. it was technology developed by texas instruments, and implemented first by apple.

and to notbob's "they don't have a 64-bit os"... why do they need it? they can support the g5, g4, and g3, just by keeping the os 32-bit.

then again, notbob's existence is just a whiny one, so, i guess he has to come up with crap like this.

ever hear of an os called windows? that still can't get away from dos? it's the same for apple, except supporting both 64-bit and 32-bit chips.

edit: psilaxs, you like holding on to that hope that the p4 can beat a g5, don't you? hyperthreading was disabled on the dual xeon system, bc it improved performance. but then again, you windows kids hafta hold up some faith system, so i guess the 'lies and shadows' one works for you... for another few weeks.

Let it be known that I am neither a windows, mac, or linux fan. I really don't care what anyone else uses or which holds the performance or usability crown. I use what I have because I'm used to it and it works. I am satisfied.

That being said, there's alot of bashing. What for? Does it really matter? isus would agree that notbob is bashing apple and it's accomplishments. I would think that, if nothing else, isus would have the senseless bashing against apple stop. So what do you do, isus? You bash notbob for bashing apple. Gee, that ought to get alot accomplished.

It really doesn't matter. People will use or stay in whatever conditions keep them satisfied [enough]. I do that, I don't care what other people use or what is the best. At some point, people just need to be able to say "fine, whatever" or keep their mouths shut.

EDIT: or at least have a civilized, logical debate of some kind. No veiled insults, no subtle bashing. Facts, things to back up those facts. Let conclusions be drawn as they will.

AMD64 is gonna cost an arm & a leg when it comes out. Think about Spring '04 to buy one.

I love the way people talk about their GHz procs like it's gonna make them download or surf the web any faster.

it would be nice to have a nice discussion about the facts, but as you can see, everybody has different versions of the 'facts'. and they are usually wrong. i.e.: psilaxs believes the dual xeons are faster with ht, when in reality, they aren't. and every apple basher i have seen around here has thrown around the compiler, and the tags, and how sse2 wasn't enabled. when not one of them read the pdf from spec, vs the actual tags for each thing. bc sse2 was enabled. etc etc etc. there are too many windows people out there, who have no idea what they are talking about. they see someone bashing apple, and instead of looking at facts, they just join in.

and i bash notbob bc he bashes me. "i'm waiting for you to say that apple invented usb and the cd burner again". hmm, yes, well, if i had ever said that in the first place, notbob would have a valid point. instead, he comes in to bullshit about how big his penis is bc he will never use a mac, etc.
