Hi!! i am thinking of buying a dvd writer, and i did some research on www.vcdhelp.com and also read a similar thread in the same section...
I already have a cdwriter - i need a dvd writer for mainly 2 reasons.......
1)Storing DATA (4gb on 1 disc - thats kewl)
2)Making exact copies of dvd's (I have a dvd readable drive)
Also will these copies play on my home dvd player?
It isKiiro 838d
I am willing to shell out round $300 - $400
hmm i did check out pioneer a05 , but it dosent support all formats (checked on vcdhelp.com)
i believe Lg and Iomega support all formats Link
Thanx
I see no reason why your media wouldnt work with your home player. Your user manual will tell you what formats it supports.
Theres a $100 difference between the Sony and the LG GMA-4040B. You cant put a lot of stock n many of the reviews, as theres just too many factors as to why some people have problems (ie: they cant read the directions, crappy windows environment, etc)
I think any name brand that supports tha many file formats will be fine, and I see no reason to arbitrarily update the firmware. One of the major considerations in buying electronics and computer parts is the manufacturers warrenty, and your ability to get proper service from the retailer.

Have you looked at the A06? Now there's one important thing to know about DVD writers and that is that the "+" format completely sucks. There's nothing redeemable about it. Its media is plain TOO EXPENSIVE. Why should I pay twice as much for DVD+R when a DVD-R holds just as much?
If I was you, I'd get the A06. You don't need all the formats. That being said, I'll sell you my Sony DRU-500a for $200. I've already updated the firmware. It includes the manual, the warranty (I don't know how long is left on it, but I got it in December), the software in all major languages.
It burns DVD-R at 4x, DVD+R at 4x, DVD-RW at 2x and DVD+RW at 2.4x. With some firmware update, the speeds get faster. It's served me well for the time I've had it. And yes, the DVDs play in your home DVD player.
And CD-R at 24x and CD-RW at 10x

I heard a week or so ago that Microsoft (Not that I'm a M$ fan) will be building support for the DVD+R/RW format into Longhorn.
Other than this piece of news, there really isnt a big advantage for one of the formats over another. I have the HP DVD 100i myself and it works like a charm (even though it can only do DVD+RW and not R)
And as far as I have seen there is no price different between the two . I checked at Best Buy, and both + and - R sell for $99.99 for 50 disks. In fact the -RW disks were $3 more than +RW for a 5 pack.
The only significant difference between +R and -R is the price of the media.
That's why Dual Format is the way to go. You can buy whichever media is cheapest now or in the future.
I would want an 8x because I'm impatient.
I want this one.

this is gr8 thanx you guys.......
okie so evy 1 just gimme a link to whatever writer they would buy.......and if possible a reason , i liked pextor (thanx compugeek)
Well as far as I have seen the price is about dead even for each format, actually as I said +RWs were actually cheaper (only one instance tho I'm sure its the opposite as well in some stores).Originally posted by CompuGeek

I would agree with the suggestion for the Dual Format drives, as it will be great in the future when one format is generally accepted as the one to use over the other.
i cames across a page that had a somewhat technical comparison n why one dvd format was better then the other...trying to refind it and post it ihere ;)

I was in the same place u were a week ago..I went out and spent 220 on a pioneer ao5 and it works great...it plays in my ps2....you should really concider this high quality drive more...yes it does not support dvd+r.....but if dvd-r works for you then why do you need it to support dvd+r......dvd+r is less compatible with dvd players than dvd-r anyway...this burner is the way to go man

Back from a long break and it seems I'm missing some posts.
8x? The only problem with that is that you would have to pay a fortune for the media, 4x is isn't worth the extra money to me. I mean, a 2x burn only takes 25 minutes. A 4x burn take 10-15, it would only save you about 5 minutes to upgrade to an 8x burner. And another problem is that I'd be surprised if your hard drive could handle that kind of sustained transfer speed. I mean, that's like 16 megabytes a second. That's pushing it if you ask me.Originally posted by CompuGeek

I want to burn fast and I don't want to be put over the barrel on media costs.
When I can buy 8x DVD-/+Rs for what CD-Rs cost now, I'll buy a DVD Burner (circa 2010).
And despite all the hearsay and conjecture, plus and minus write-once disks have the same compatability.
Some people have to try different brands because some picky devices don't like certain colors of dye.
