What equiptment do I need to convert my avi movies to play on
my dvd player on the tv?
Well it depends. I have a laptop and I would need to buy some cords and stuff for it to go through onto the tv. But I'm guessing your on the desktop? I'm not sure what it's called (the hardware) but it would go somewhere into your desktop, then you would plug it into I imagine your video-aux with some software on the laptop. I'm not sure how much this hardware would all cost. Maybe someone like Krell can help out or anyone else.
But make sure your desktop and tv are near each other. I'm not sure how long cords can get.

Woops, I read the question wrong. To burn your .avi movies onto a disk so they can then play on your tv.
You will need a converter program like TMPGEnce. You load the .avi movie and say you want to convert it to .mpg
Then once it's complete get a program like Nero/Roxio CD/DVD Creator 6 and burn them onto a disk. You might have to split the movie up into two parts. So then it'd take two CD-R's but it all depends on movies size/length.

First off you posted in the wrong section, this belongs in A/V. edit : OK now it's in the AV section, Thanks whoever! Second and more important, did you even bother to follow the link that was posted in the last message you left there? The website that was recommended has more info and tools than any other place on the web. My advice is to follow the help that was there, first and if you still don't understand come back but post back in A/V and add to your existant post there don't randomly post around fishing for answers. You will need to look under the svcd or vcd guides and make sure you check the compatibility database there to check if your dvd player will even be able to recognize a vcd or svcd. (do this FIRST otherwise your wasting your time on the second more difficult part, making a vcd). Good Luck!

you need to convert the avis to vcds. there are a number of programs online to do this (just type avi to vcd in a google search). once the file is converted, you will have a .cue and .bin file. select burn image in nero and choose the .cue file. after the vcd is made, it should play on your dvd player.
Oh yes I also left that out. That your DVD Player needs to accept VCD's. If it doesn't don't even bother trying to do this then. If your not sure if it accepts VCD's, then get your model # and brand and do a little research on Google.com

Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be.
geez...
i tried to give you the best way that i know how to go about it, and you ignored it completely or something.
go to the site i suggested previously *ahem* http://www.dvdrhelp.com/guides
and follow the damn guides for svcd/vcd
i believe in second chances for ppl if you choose to ignore it again, i wont even bother next time no matter what it is.
you asked for help and i gave you the best resource available, if you cant manage to follow step by step guides thats 1 thing, to not even bother is another.
all guides fully explain what you need and what to do!!!
Ea$u_E, I went to that site, learned a lot but stil want to know
what conversion tool to get the avi to svid/vcd. some comments indicate mpeg4 is needed- so- my quiry. sorry to cause
problems.
The encoder tool that you will get over at THE LINKED SITE will have whatever the encoder you need. vcd is mpg 1 and svcd is mpg 2, I believe, so no you don't get Mpeg 4. For the love of Pete go and read the guides. If you can't do that, then trust me making a vcd is way to hard. I know, I have spent hours trying just what you are. And just so you know, I now just watch on my computer if that gives you a clue. :shy

And if you don't wanna or already have a AGP graphics card...just disable the SiS driver and benefit from it's DVD decoding assistance and TV output...it'll even decode S/VCD (mpeg1 and 2). For the price it's well worth it as the output isn't half bad...much better then re-encoding a lossy format such as DivX to a less lossy format...and still ending up with 1.2 gig's worth of data to burn to two discs...which you have to swap to watch a movie fully. Toss in really blocky fast motion scenes on a VCD and the long encoding time...added to that the need to burn at 1x because of VCD's non-ECC formatting (no error correction) that pretty much makes the CD so delicate that a few scratches can throw the audio outta sync and muck up most of the video..and you've got a big ole waste of time. LOL

I'm with CCSDUDE, my DivX collection is infinately more useful after having bought a vid card with an out port. I am thinking about getting a cheap box and wireless keyboard/mouse and doing a dedicated media server in the entertainment center.
Anyway, NERO has a VCD encoder don't they?
