The best way to get the RIAA to backoff is to organize politically and pressure congress to change
the copyright laws. Note that the Supreme Court ruled recently that congress could extend the length
of a copyright. Therefore, they are the major power behind making the world right for file sharing. If you'al worked to change that back to a reasonable length, and also change what is defined as fair use, the RIAA would definately be on the defensive.
Suggestion: search the websites of congressional, senatorial, and presidential candidates, and find a
champion that can lead the cause.

I'm past the point of thinking thaat congress can do anything to help the situation. No, our best is through the courts. Organizations like EFF are really ddoing a lot to impact the laws that govern content in a wired world.
I know it's stating the obvious, but it's worth saying again and again: there have been major victories recently in the courtroom.
