Napster is to relaunch before Christmas offering both subscription and free services. Napster 2.0 will allow users access to up to 500,000 tracks by paying for individual downloads or a monthly subscription. Napster has signed agreements with the five major record labels as well as the top independents. In a statement, the company said the service will offer music by artists from Eminem and Miles Davis to the Dixie Chicks and Bob Marley. Chris Corog, chairman and CEO of Roxio Inc, the new owners of the service, said, "Napster 2.0 is being built from the ground up to reflect the essence of independence and innovation that the brand is known for.
"Consumers want flexibility, and for the first time they will not have to choose between downloads or subscriptions. "Napster 2.0 will allow music fans to do both, putting the power where it belongs - in the hands of consumers." Started by college student Shawn Fanning as a way to connect like-minded music fans so they could share songs for free over the internet, Napster filed for bankruptcy last year.
Napster will re-emerge in an increasingly competitive marketplace for legitimate online music services which now includes Apple Computer's iTunes, MusicNet, Pressplay and Listen.com.
Aren't you all just excited about this? /ends sarcasm

A little, i have to see how the new napster is going to turn out when it is released.
I have been waiting for this for years! I love napster. If it looks okay and the inferface and stuff isn't gay like KazaA then I will buy into it monthly. I will for sure do 1 test month. I hope it's not more than $20/month.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. Theoretically a centralized server would be able to control it's content.Originally posted by mr.jip

To bad it's gonna be a major flop
if ther was a centralized client that controlled content, couldnt it work like bit torrent eg.
the album ( for example) can be download for a certain time, then the album can be shared to users within the network who didnt get the album of the tracker.
Maybe this would work better for up an coming artists without copyrights an stuff

people will come back to napster, your lieing if you say you won't even DL you'll be too curioious to see if the greatest (could debate withkazaa, aimster (jk), morpheus ect.) can bounce back from it's dissapointing closure. congrats to napster Remember their gonna be on a new version so it might be some holes, but they could turn into a good program in in time.
if it's on a centralized Server it's gonna kick ass because you can for example they can block Dr.Dre but you can Rename it to like lets say DDre or or Snoop Dogg to like Sn00p Dogg. That's one way you can go through and still share Copyrighted material eventually if people search for example still Dre it'll show up DDre or whatever you renamed it to then they can download it. :)
Of course they might be spying on people see if they rename Artists etc..... But who knows? we'll have to wait.
Who Carez Anywayz
What i woul like to know is how they play to sell the paid service when they also offer a free one?"Consumers want flexibility, and for the first time they will not have to choose between downloads or subscriptions. "Napster 2.0 will allow music fans to do both, putting the power where it belongs - in the hands of consumers."
Logic indicates that the free service should have less attributes so that the paid version would look desirable. Give the ppl a taste and then pull them in when they are hooked?

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".
