Try the K-Lite Codec Pack & just grab the basic version. It's basically a bunch of codecs put together that are needed in order to play your media files.

    Edit: here's a helpful link

I just tried that. It still doesn't work. I've tried downloading this file several times from different people, but it never plays. Any other suggestions? I really, really want this file!!

If the K Lite codec pack will not allow the file to play, you got duped by a fake file. (that or you installed it wrong, which i don't see how)

The K Lite codec pack has everything you need from AC3 audio OGG audio codecs Xvid, DivX, Mpeg 2, Mpeg 4 direct show filter, divX, SVCD, AVI so the file you have has to be bunk.

Psilax gave you the nust n bolts of it, h o w e v e r .. .. I have a few jpop vidoes that will NOT play w/o the proper Mp4 codec . . so you may have an exception.

Search this site, or google, for G-Spot.

You run that , browse to the file, and see what it says . .

Also, verify that you have the COMPLETE file.

If all else fails you PM me with the EXACT file information such as name , size, and what G-Spot says.

Is there any way to tell before you download if it's fake or not? All of the ones I've tried won't preview while it's downloading. Is that any indication of if it's bad?
    Thanks.

Yes, it's called finding verified files. Pending on what program you use, you can find verified files that have been verified by other people. What program are you using. Probably Kazaa Lite, right?

BTW, You can't play AVI files until it's been finished downloading. That could be your problem. Use the AVI Preview to "preview" your files.

Kazaa Lite, yes. I tried the AVI Preview - didn't work.

I just downloaded G-Spot. Two of the files I got are bad. One of them is good.
Now how do I play the good one?

BTW-Thanks so much for the help!

    Liz

G-Spot should tell you if you have the needed codecs installed.

If thats the case, try to open the file with WMP.

Re: other 2 files, what qualifies them as bad? Are they incomplete, or did G-Spot not show the codec installed?

Yeah, the other two were incomplete.

G-Spot said this about the good one: File Length Correct, Codec Is Installed (both Audio & Video)

So, I just tried it in WMP(Windows Media Player?) and WMP said it "encountered and unknown error".
    Now what??

Do you have any other media players, such as ZOOM PLayer installed?

Did you install the core of the Nimo codec pack, or are you using a kazaa codec pack?

Some of these errors are so cryptic, you may not be able to get it, but, do this:

Go to Sourceforge and get the Alpha FFDShow . . . .03.

When you install that, say yes to everything.

Then try to play the file again

PM me with the name of the file, filesize, etc. and I'll see what I can do for you. (Don't post the name here, copyright issues, blah blah) It could be a fake, so I'll verify and see what is going on. I'll be online for a while since I just woke up and I have no work today. (sundays pay better)

IMPORTANT EDIT: Don't use the Nimo Codec pack, it can screw up your system, and I've had to help many people out of codec hell. DO NOT USE IT.

Go ahead and PM me, I've helped many on this and other boards and I'm sure I can fix this for you just fine.

What's wrong with Nimo? It is way more comprehensive than K-lite pack, but it's not been updated for a while.

I use it exclusively, never use Kazaa anything.

But then again, I actually READ the directions, I know this suprises the hell out of some of you, that I would seemingly waste 3 seconds of my time, but it really works, try it.

When you install Nimo, install the LEAST amount first.

Another thing, I really couldnt care less what codec pack anyone uses, but you may have noticed, that I dont especially appreciate having my time wasted, so when one or two of us are working an issue, dont come along and try to scoop up with the "save the day" attitude, and undermine what we are doing.

This may be of some interest... : )

    http://www.techimo.com/articles/index.pl?photo=33

And heres a shitload of codecs...(skip out on Nimo or other 'codec packs' as they tend to freak the fuck out)

    http://www.souxin.com/mpeg4software.htm

And heres a useful file...it will play ALL mpeg4 based files...Divx or Xvid and even the funky VKI mpeg4...however you must have the other codecs installed if you wish to edit or compress into such formats via something like virtualdub www.virtualdub.org
