mp3's dont work like that. once you make them, that's generally as small as they get.

zipping them doesnt make them much smaller.
i dont use rar, but my guess would still be that you can't compress something i already compressed.

Mp3 pro, only works up to 64 kilobits, and is supposed to sound equal to a 128Kbit Mp3.

other then that, no, a 160 kilobit mp3 will be the same size regardless of what program you use to encode it.

Although sound quality varies widely between encoders.

Don't compress things with a lossy encoder more than once.

mp3 is a lossy format, so please don't use any program that claims to compress them further.

In the best case, the audio will sound like shit, in the worst case your soul will be condemned to Hell.

The smaller you make your mp3 file, the worse the sound quality will be.

Its best to stick around 192kbps and higher in my opinion. Quality is more desireable then small size.

EAC and CDEX are the best mp3 encoders. Find them with a google search.

Use EAC or Cdex as Rickio mentioned. From what I know, both use secure mode. Use Lame 3.92 to encode.....I don't recommend 3.93 simply because it was a little buggy.

And of course dbPowerAmp is a great tool for those songs that you don't rip yourself. I convert every song I download to --alt-preset standard.....especially useful when d/l those crap quality songs from *cough kazaa cough*......

    Just a note to Rahwgwar:

When you say you 'convert every song you download' what you are really doing is decompressing the song and encoding it again.

    This is very bad.

You are better off with the original MP3, no matter how it was encoded.

Every time you encode, you degrade the sound further. You need to encode the original .WAVs ripped from the CD.
