Try using some of the mods they tend to work well. And try to stay connected as long as possible. ex. leave it on overnight. After being connected 5 hrs my dl was up to 80.

first you gotta make sure you have a high ID when connecting to servers. a low ID results in you gettin old and grey before file finishes. update your server list regularly to obtain the most sources

second, the ed2k network benefits those that wait.

set up some files to d/l preferably while you sleep or go to work just stay away from comp, its like a watched pot that never boils,
after a few hours or so your speed will increase dont worry much. takes time but the quality files on the network are more than worth it

Having a high ID is the most important thing...also make sure you are connected to a good server that has a big population and leave Emule running for a LONG time and as it runs..it will pick up speed

I think the problem with eMule is that the users are too "me me me" and try to max out their dl's and get as many files as possible, whereas on networks like Kazaa and DC, there are lots of people that share tons of stuff that might download an mp3 a day or something. With the RIAA sueing people, people just uncheck sharing and figure their problems are solved. How wrong they are. Other than that, for all intents and purposes, eMule should be the fast network around, but it's not.
People on my "cool list" in no particular order.

For me, eMule (or any of its mods) never connect. eDonkey2000 works best for me. But you do have to have a lot of patience on the ed2k network, as downloads will take awhile (days, weeks, etc.).

EDIT: Actually, now eMule works good for me.

First you need to be patient then you get the speed! I hated eMule the first time I tried it but you have to consider why so many people use it and wonder how it works for them....so I persisted and it is excellent. It can be fast but often seems slow.
    Here's some useful advice:
1 Read the Help and FAQ, they are the best Help files I found.
2 Forget about hacks or people claiming semi mystic adjustment processes to raise speed. It's all bullshit. And usually in French.
3 Just configure it with the connection wizard (assuming you got it through your firewall etc)
4 Share files that people want. On eMule this means ISOs, Movies, complete CDs ripped with EAC and LAME/APE/OGG etc. Quality!
5 Never switch it off! Because eMule works on a credit system, the more people you upload to the faster you can go to the front of a queue. So even if you aren't downloading keep sharing, it's to your advantage and everyone else's too.
6 Request lots of files! Maybe start with 10 big files to download. It will take some time before anything happens the first time you use eMule, maybe several hours. Don't worry, you are moving up a lot of queues.
7 Be patient. It may take several days to complete the first download. By this time you will have uploaded to several thousand different users and your credit rating has improved.
8 Request some more big files to download. Keep it cooking, you will find new stuff completing every day.
9 Use Sharereactor to select verified files to download. Before you do this go into eMule preferences and the "General" tab and click ed2k links.
10 Update the server list regularly, see the FAQ/Help for this or search on google for "Server List for eDonkey2000 and eMule". At first you will get bumped off servers and occasionally it will hunt around for a while before you get connected again. As your credit rating improves this happens less and less. Don't worry about it you will still be d/l and u/l but just not making new connections.
As more people with fast connections use eMule and less people use dial up it will get faster. My max d/l was over 120KBps (it surprised me as I have 64KBps cable), I average around 30KBps down, often over 40 for long periods, sometimes over 50 for a long time. It just depends on the availability of the files and the connection of the sharers. No magic involved.
    Good Luck!

p.s. don't sit there and watch the statistics/download speeds. You will end up in the nut house.

    find lots of sources,

1000+ sources and leave it on over night will quicken the process

go into options and maxout your sources and dl speed (upload too :))

Don't max out your upload speed, everything will stop working

Don't max out your upload speed, everything will stop working. Leave your upload speed at about 80% of max. Best of all just use the wizard. It works.

Here's what the eMule Help says:

    "Two important aspects to consider:
    Setting Upload limit too high
Every download needs some spare upload bandwidth to make requests, acknowledge packages etc. So if you set this limit to high the upload will slow your download as no upload bandwidth is available to make these requests.

    Setting Upload limit too low
eMule features a credit system based on how much you give to the network. A lower upload means fewer credits and a longer wait time in queues."

Everything is in the Help files! (almost)

The thing with the Edonkey network is that it is a compromise between speed and quality. The speed is slower than others, but the quality of the files can't be beat, there are not nearly the number of fakes and mislabed files as there are on FT

As others have said, speed is not everything. To me, rare and high quality files are always worth the wait.

There you have it ilanpro !
Everyone seems to have given you the jist about the ed2k network.
If you try and compare emule to any other network you will be frustrated. It is not like any other network and it is simply the best. As said before. Quality over speed.

I have no idea what your downloading but if it is small single mp3's , thats not what emule is good for. Instead is is better for large files, complete albums for example or iso's.

Go to http://jigle.com and run searchs for what you might want to download

I think time, the numer of downloads and the number of max connections make a big difference. If you have a fast computer. Try set the max connections to 2500 for example. I use upload speed at 65 kByte/sek. With these settings I´m often over 100 kByte/sek in download and sometimes up to 150 kByte/sek. Im never undwer 50 kByte/sek. But as other people here say: "Wait is the golden word".
