    AVG Pro edition 7

I had heard a lot about the upcoming AVG edition 7 and was curious to see for myself how well it worked. I downloaded the trial version from the Grisoft website - AVG Professional Single Edition and judging by what the program did to my computer, I have no intention of using this program again or ever recommending it to anyone.

I ran the virus scan and the program is the worst memory hog I have ever seen over the past several years. Even the games I play on the internet which may demand huge amounts of memory don't require as much as this program. My computer slowed down to a virtual standstill while this was running. My computer is a celeron processor running at 1.2 GHZ. I have 384 Mb of ram memory and a 60 Gb hard drive.

The computer slowed down so much I couldn't open E-Mail or access any other files or programs while this monster was running the virus scan. According to memory boost pro , AVG was using 194,000,000 bytes of memory while running the virus scan. This is more than all other programs on my computer combined (actually more than twice all other programs combined.)

In comparison, Internet Explorer was using 21,000,000 bytes and Avast (the program that replaced it was using 22,000,000 bytes. I can't understand what the reason was for this program to require such huge amounts of memory but I certainly would say that its not acceptable for home users or many business users because it renders the computer unusable while it is running.

In addition to all other factors, AVG 7 is no longer free and outside of a 30 day trial, you now must pay for it. I recommend anyone wanting a good free anti-virus program instead to download avast which is available at these sites :

what's funny , is that they said it would always be free, until a few months ago.

It uses hardly any resources at all on mine and runs pretty smoothly. Only downside is having to wait for a keygen :;)

I have had no trouble with AVG 7, and have found it to be the best AV I've used. Unfortunately, my trial ran out a while back, and I can't get it to work otherwise. BAH!

    To Aznmask

That is what memory bost pro registered during the time that AVG 7 was running. I have had this program for years and it is very reliable. I also checked the stats 3 times because I was skeptical myself. And there is nothing wrong with my eyes. Perhaps there is something wrong with your brain.

I'm disappointed in the fact that AVG will no longer have a free edition.

True, but will they still have updates for version 6 (definitions)?
