Im not so sure... i think its the industry. The reason why i say this is because no "one person" can rename so many files just for giggles and laughes. I know a person who works at Microsoft and he says he knows for sure that the industry has people doing this on a regular basis. In fact they get paid to do it. :devil

i wouldn't be surprised if this had happened to kazaa, since they seem to be more under the scope of the riaa, but winmx?

nah, everybody complains about the queues, and the riaa knows this, so they dont even bother.

both. I say its more a record industry type thing, but there are common users who do that sort of thing, either so they can leech off without providing real content (by having it look as if they are really sharing) or because.............
like what isus said, they wanna look cool. that seems really unlikely though, how many people drag thier friends to see thier file content in winmx? there are people that stupid and sad, but you'd get the feeling that they would be using crap like pressplay or regular kazaa. I'm rambling. whatever.

but yeah, more of an industry thing.

and careless idiot users who don't inspect what they download, they just let it sit in thier shared folder undetected until they get around. which is why its always good to keep seperate what you just downloaded and what you share.

I'm sure that WinMX is being watched because every time I get on it MIT shows up on peerguardian. This is one time I believe
it's not a false positive because it's known that MIT watches WinMX. I have noticed more misnamed files than usual lately also.

Mislabeled files would defeat the arguments of the RIAA. It is by way of filenames that they have evidence that a person is infringing on copyrights. So if the filenames are in doubt, then so is their evidence.

-tis way industry has kinda capped the correct(as in files wot u want, but u dont get) amount of data being transferred, if u can thnk abt the magnitude of files which r available on winmx/kazaa.

Well here's my Opinion about WINMX even tho it's cool for Mp3's and everything doesnt it make you wonder why they havent got sued or anything from Riaa? i mean cause put it this way ALL the Networks have been sued but Except WinMX's well (most of them)

I think that Riaa has Access to anyone that's why they havent even NAMED winMX on their List Because they get more money by sueing individuals than trying to fight the Whole Network like Kazaa and a couple of other Networks, as you see WinMX used to be an OpenNap client JUST for OpenNap before they went p2p But now that they're P2P why isnt Riaa even thinking about Sueing them? just makes me wonder but hey who knows?. IF anyone can explain why they havent got sued and alot of other p2p networks (decentralized) have.

i visited my Buddy at Microsoft today in Redmond, WA. If you have never been to MS then yer not missin much. First off all the bldgs are just numbered. There are receptionists at most bldgs and everythings all secret (shhhh). The first thing they ask you is ... do you have an appointment ? Finally i found him and he came down to meet me. We talked a bit about this issue and he did reveal to me that MS has a very small hand in all this (more like a pinky). I won't go into to much details but i have a fair warning for you all (from him).

There are "viruses" being developed out there that will be embedded into files in the P2P networks. they can do many things but they are intended to find out what you have on your PC. Silently. Even if you have virus scannners and Firewalls. If you play a movie or audio file he said it can activate as long as your player , like windows media player, has been allowed access to the Internet (hint... hint..). Other more offensive ones can delete the MP3, and AVI, etc... files without you noticing. He said all youll see is a window saying something like "Contacting vendor to validate Codec"
and while your watching this screen it delets all music and movie files. on your drive(s). I kinda laughed at that but he seemed sincere.

I tend to beleive him due to his character. He said to be warned that in the immediate future there MAY (he said may) be a flood of viruses on all P2P networks before the end of this year. And to keep a good backup of your primary drive (i have ghosted my main drive and its sitting there looking at me). Just in case you get a, what he called a "looker virus". He did say that Microsoft has in no way takin part in the development of these viruses but they have been contacted by... you know who. He had much to say but i just wanted to get the main points across. the rest of it was Blah, Blah, Blah... techy crap.

Ok i have said to much and im sure he will kick for the nutsack next time i see him. But oh well... i didnt mention his name so if he gets pissy ill kick back.

I think they are. When I went to download movies and vidioes. The title was not what the music was, So yes in answer to your question I think they are.

but wouldn't hashing take care of this? like even a few lines of code would make it a different hash, so you could do like fastrackmovies did. even though it would be harder at first to find out if your files were infected, identifying methods would develop. one step ahead again.

wait, isn't it techinically impossible for a genunie mp3 file to be infected? aside from the cleverly disguised fake mp3's, the infection would have to come from other files, like pirated softwares in .exe's. (hence microsoft's involvement. gotta give 'em credit, they are an efficient company, killing two birds with one stone) so if one just stuck to mp3s , they'd be fine wouldn't they?
but then again, how many of us can resist downloading free copies 200$ softwares???

the viruses would be more of a newb problem, like spywares and fake files and porn bots.

I have also noticed an increase of misnamed files - just to confirm your point.
And about the virus thing from the Microsoft guy, I am pretty sure it is impossible to embed a virus into an MP3. I think it would have already been done by now.
But embedding something into another program, that is another matter altogether. I would not see one coming out from a Windows Media Player or from RealPlayer, those are watched too closely by the tech elite for that type of thing. There would be hell to pay if that happened. But something under the radar which plays music and movies, I could see that.
The RIAA will do whatever it can to stop the filesharing of music, and when bandwidth is less of a factor in the future, the MPAA will be on the bandwagon too and the boycott will begin there as well. I can see lots of nasty things in development from these guys and their lackeys, but there are plenty of techies out there and the general public that can stop them.

I have noticed a few miss named files as of late but who really knows why this goes on. Could it be people sharing thier Kazaa folder, just being an ass, some kinda winmx glitch? Who knows.

Let the RIAA monitor all they want cause im only trading as of now. Thats right, trading. Do you think this makes it any more safe? I feel it does.(Im fairly safe anyway because I don't download much if any music - as Im old and have all the stuff I liked as a youth) I have also added a message to my auto responder to the effect of If your connected with the government or RIAA you are denied access to my computer. I know this sucks, to trade only, but I feel I must think of my own interest first and others can think what they may. Luckily I have made alot of contacts in the past on winmx so I have a broad range of people to get different things from. Who wants to trade??
