Now that ogg vorbis 1.0 is being released
and more and more people are using ogg to
compress music instead of mp3,
I suggest that WinMx include ogg either by itself,
or as a combination of MP3 / Ogg,
in the Default Search File Type settings.
This would make it easier to find ogg files,
keeping them seperate from all the other non mp3 files.
What do you think?

Yes, that would be great now that i'm switching my library over to ogg. Anyone know any good freeware mp3 to ogg converters?
I use dBpowerAMP Music Converter. You also need the Ogg Vorbis Codec so you can convert over...and best of all it is free.

If you didn't yet catch the info from HydrogenAudio, that Roberto (rjamorim) is hosting Vorbis 1.0 binaries compiled with ICL6, which are faster than Case's VC6++ compile, you can download these faster compiles from Roberto's site - Rarewares.

yeah, converting mp3 to ogg isn't a good idea. the ogg file will always be worse than the mp3 file due to the loss in compression.

Why would it matter? I converted them to wav's first, but now i'm glad i preserved the originals, the ogg files were too big so i'm sticking with mp3 for now.

You can't put back something that's not there.
For example:
You have 100 marbles in a box (wav file)
You want to put them in a smaller box (mp3 file)
So you have to take away 20 marbles to get them in
the new box (lossy compression)
Now you want to put them back in the big box,
which originally held 100. (wav file)
But all you have is 80 marbles to put there,
because you threw out 20 to get them in the small box. (lossy compression)
Then you want to put the 80 marbles into a new box (ogg file)
During all this moving around, 5 marbles were
worn out.(lossy compression again)
You end up with 75 good marbles.
See how that works?
That's the nature of lossy compression.
This now ends today's lesson...
