What are the benefits of having a high ID compared to a low ID?
Do you get faster speeds if you connect with a high ID?
Do you get more sources to download from if you connect with a high ID?
Right now I am getting speeds of 1.0 Kb/s to 3.5 Kb/s. Is that the best I can get?
Its one of those things that depends on what server you connect to , i mainly get 4 kb/s and above download but i am on cable , you will never download as fast as kazaa or bittorrent but the stuff available on emule is far better quality(reasn being you generally require a brain to use emule unlike kazaa - someone once said kazaa is the AOL of the p2p world and emule the fine wine), make sure you have the latest version of emule and that you set your firewall (if u have 1) properly, i never really bother 2 much as my machine runs 24/7 and i download an average of 5-6 gb /week usually.

On E-mule/E-donkey ID has nothing to do with speeds you will get, (that is figured on your share rating)
Low ID = You will be rejected by 85% of the servers. Since Low ID usually means you are fire walled, or certain ports are not accessible, thus the server itself must route the traffic for you, and do all the push request, placing a burden on the server you are connected to
"High" ID = You can connect to just about any server, no troubles.
Actually, a low id can affect speed. If you have a low id, you cannot connect to other low id users. So that cuts some of the people you can connect to, effectively cutting off sources.
The server or clients you are connected to will help out, and facilitate connections between a Firewalled user and a Open user, but, two Firewalled clients can not communicate. This means that many possible file sources are not available to those who are Firewalled.
And what type of modem do you have? I have a cable modem, and I usually download around 150 or 200 Kb/s with emule. Granted, it doesn't start like that right away, but after bout an hour of getting sources and everything, it takes off.
Also, I don't know if you have, but if you haven't, check out the edonkey and emule FAQ at the top of this forum, here.
If you would like to try out alot of different emule mods, try my site at www.piranetus.com Just try the different mods until you find one you like.
Don't give up on this network yet. It takes a bit to get going, but it really is a great one. It's my favorite network. I can literally find anything I want on it.

>What are the benefits of having a high ID compared to a low ID?
Faster downloads on average.
>Do you get more sources to download from if you connect with a high ID?
Yes.
Filesharing programs work by opening a connection from one computer
to another over the internet. Last time I looked about 2 out of
three filesharing users can't receive incoming connections.
That means people who are firewalled can only download
from a third of the users on the network, this of cources means they
have to wait longer in queues.
>ALL your data must come via the server.
No, only searchs for files and chunks go via the server, the actual
content does not. If firewalled user A has desireable file xxx.avi
and that is the only copy in the network then firewalled users
B,C and D can't download xxx.avi.
>You are unable to connect directly to another user and download.
No, you can only connect to unfirewalled users.
>High ID. You can connect freely to other users for sending and recieving data.
Yes but the thing which distinguishes a high id user is that other
people can connect to them.
>shut down those firewalls and quit being so paranoid...
Internet connection sharing systems are more of a problem.
Configure port forwarding in your NAT router or 2k/xp ICS box.
