is there any way to take a screenshot of a video, an avi (xvid) in particular? i know most apps just use a screen overlay and when you take a screenshot, you get a solid color instead of the pic of the movie. ive heard that if you turn hardware acceleration all the way down, you can do it, but supposedly the video quality lacks then too. any suggestions?
Use a camera.. hehe:blah No really, I found a way but it sucks so bad I will not even bother, bad quality.

Advanced AVI Splitter allows you to save a frame to bmp/jpeg, never used it, but it's trialware..
i'm sure there's others that do the same that is freeware.
you mean like this. bsplayer allow you to do the with a key board short cut. p for original size and shift p for the size and aspect ratio it is viewed at.

You can also take a capture with cyberlink power dvd just press C to take a capture then paste in paint etc.
no pasting in paint with bsplayer it comes out as a jpeg ready to go

ok, i installed BSplayer, played the movie, and captured the screen. i go to look at the capped pic, but its really messed up. it looks like a windows dialogue box that has been streched width-wise to about 10 x its original size.
play it in powerdvd, that'll do ya.

hypersnap is probably your best bet.
Wonder....
1) Install the Xvid CODEC (not ffdirectshow)
2) Download/use Virtualdub
3) Open file in vdub
4) Seek to frame you wish to grab
5) hit ctrl+1
6) Paste image in PSP/Photoshop/whatever
That'll do it...
If you wanna do it another way give this a try..(if vdub says the Xvid is bad...happens sometimes)
1) Open WMP6.4 with said video...
2) Go to properties (in WMP)
3) Double click FFdirectshow
4) Go down it's list to 'Grab"
5) Check the 'grab' checkbox...
6) Set up grabs preferences..
7 ) Grab away.. :D

ccsdude, that's a whole load of trouble. i'll assume that the problems earlier were with overlay setting, and video acceleration.
one solution would be to turn down the hardware acceleration, but the easiest solution would be using hypersnap.
dont understand it works fine for me. oh and by the way can anyone guess what movie this is

ah great movie that, the warriors is one of my fav's

VirtualDub does let you take screen caps, but they're a bit smaller than the original picture would be.. so I guess that's only an option if nothing else works.
If it's an xvid.. you could also try InterVideo WinDVD Player (I have version 4) and it will let me play one of my xvid movies with it, and there's a screen capture option with the program. This is mostly what I use, and haven't had any problems. The only thing is, it prefers divx, xvid, and mpg files over some of the more poorly encoded avi's, but if your file is good quality there shouldn't be a problem.
