Winmx causes systemwide crash

Good morning- I have been using winmx for the past year or so on a more or less occasional basis. Yesterday I was doing an unattended download and when I came home I found that the computer had the blue screen of death on it.

After spending the last day an a half dinking around with this thing, I've come to the conclusion that I might have some new virus or something.

First off my system - win98, zone alarm pro, norton anti virus, macafee spamkiller.

Symptoms: Whenever I try to open winmx, not only does winmx crash, but it brings down my whole computer-

the errors: MSGSRV32 not responding,
NAVAPW32 Not responding, amonst other numerous blue screens of death.

After I sort through at least 10 blue screens of death, I then find that Zone Alarm Pro is not responding, Macafee is not responding- and then I work my way through my task manager clicking on non-responding programs until I have to do a hard reboot (reset button).

Now, someone suggested I should uninstall winmx and try it again..... well, I try to uninstall and .....voilia! Blue screen of death....etc.....

So, I figured I'd be smart and try another file sharing program, so I downloaded emule..... I ran the setup....and...???? guess what??? Blue screen of death.....

So as long as I don't use a file sharing program, my system works fine.... but as soon as I head that way.... I am in for about 10 minutes worth of dinking around with error messages.... any one have any ideas???

i don't think you have a virus try updating your norton or mcafee virus defintions, then run your virus scaner. If this doesn't work try booting up your comp in safe mode and then try running your virus scaner. If you don't have a virus your probably just don't have enough system resources.

All my virus definitions are up to date and system resources are definitely not a problem.

It's been a while since I've rebooted to safe mode- how do I do that?

heh heh... bsod... fun fun.

for safe mode:
press f8 as many times as humanly possible during startup. i'm pretty sure that's it.

get winxp or something...

First off- I cannot update to XP without causing myself untold hours of screwing around trying to get this computer up and running in XP. I run my business off this computer and I cannot afford for it to be down that long.

Now.... on to the topic at hand. I have the most recent NAV definitions, but I downloaded them again just to be sure. Rebooted in safe mode, ran the anti virus program and it found nothing.

Tried to start Winmx and the system crashed.

Any other ideas (other than getting winxp?)

Works just fine on my windows 98.

That error sounds like it may have something to do with your Norton. Have you tried uninstalling Norton and trying a different program?

when i did a google search for the errors you mentioned it turned up these - tells you what the errors are and how to fix them... it these dont work try searching google some more (copy and paste the errors into the search window)

A PART SOLUTION
Im still not sure how to get rid of the navappw32 error, but i can handle navemail32.dll. just click this link; http://www.dynamiclink.nl/index.htm and then were it says "search" search for navemail32.dll. when the results for the search show up un the right hand side, scroll down untill you find the file you searched for. Then place it into its directory (the directory will be written on the error pop-up....probablu C:\norton or something, watever you set it to).
Voila, no more navemail.dll error. the navap32 is probably related to the fact that your copies are pirated, if they arent then i feel sorry for you.
