New file sharing idea

I heard some friends who have 56k and they whine all the time how long it takes to dl mp3 and i came up with this...

Is it possible to make a prog that shares mp3s that are 32k (really low qual) thus the size would be considerably smaller

the prog encodes the mp3s after you dl them into your "my music" and the 32k version in the my shared folder.

Would this work?

no i mean it would be encoded to the level of your choosing when it finished dling

enocoding a lower quality file to a higher quality will not improve the quality.

Why don't you just download blank .txt files while your at it ? You will get about as much enjoyment.

Tell your friends to shut their mouths, because they are getting free music with almost no skill level required. If they don't like it, tell 'em to prostitute their bodies off in order to pay for broadband.

err..yeh like cpugenius said this cant work .

encoding a file to mp3 works by removing sound waves. Once those waves have been removed they can never be put back again.

Think about it, if this were possible, everyone would download their music at a bit rate of 10kbs and then reencode it up to 320 after they downloaded it.

lol... sorry supreme. while good in theory, it's just not a good idea. that's like dubbing a cd to tape so you can listen to it. the tape will always leave you with static and an empty feeling, but when you listen to the cd, you will be happy.

the better idea would be to either:
a. find a way to compress an mp3 (which can't be done with zip or anything like that) or to
b. find a better way to encode mp3's... like dolby's aac. even though i hear the sound quality sucks, at least someone is trying something different. now let's make it better.

Shit man, i was stuck on 56k for years. I downloaded damn near my maximum each day, and i never once complained. Sure, i leapt at the chance to get dsl and cable, but tell your friends to shut up.

If they're that desparate, burn the stuff to cd and post it to them.

I too subscribe to a 56k isp. But because of the outdated phone system here I can only use about 24k of it. Yes I know this sucks major ass. My only solution to the slow dl problem is to set up 8 or 10 dls before going to bed at night, or before going to work. I have built a collection of about 15 gig this way. Took about a year and a half to do this. Just takes a little patience! :wings

lol. when you do that, and they all come thru at once, your modem will almost literally catch fire. more than 3 consecutive dl's cuts my dl bandwidth from 2.5kB to about 1.8... not good.
