    Gateway Anti Piracy classes?

Gateway is going to start offering classes on how to Download people's music from legit sites in classes at all gateways stores US wide. The classes will also teach users how to digitally back up cds and burn them as well.

Gateway spokesman Brad Williams said the way to fight piracy is by offering consumers a compelling legitimate alternative. Although the music industry has "some very legitimate grievances" about piracy, he said, "we haven't seen much from the major labels in terms of educating consumers."

There is also supposed legislation on the table that will hinder "piracy" and mandate that it be on all computers or a tax on computer and other MP3 devices even far as blank Cds to compensate copyright holders. I think they should be thinking of consumer backlash if it passed. Would you buy a computer that wouldn't eve allow you to burn cds? or could only download from legit RIAA backed websites? I don't know anyone that would. Gateway and other computer manufacturers are jsut keeping their business in mind and employees as well. Should those people suffer jsut because the RIAA nand it's croonies feel they are loosing to much money and refuse the get with the new milenium? What do you all think?

Nobody is disputing the coolness of the cow. Not many animals could sing a re-mix of Sundown.

The Cow is the only thing Gateway has going for it. As for anti-piracy classes it is feeble attempt to play lip service to record companies so they won't get sued. On one hand they are trying get on the mp3 bandwagon (which where the customer base is), but also protecting their behinds with an obviously transparent anti-piracy ploy. The RIAA would be really stupid if they fall this boloney as sincere attempt in thier favor.

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".

The bad news about all this is that Gateway is making a sketchy proposition: a computer company on its downward slide helping consumers copy copyrighted material onto alternative media and risk getting prosecuted for it under pending legislation.

Replace "mp3" with "cigarette" or "alcohol" in the Gateway pitch and watch people get outraged.

Seriously, the RIAA already attaches a surcharge to CD burners, blank CDs, minidiscs, DAT and other types of recording tape regardless of where you bought them or how you plan to use them. Before you've even opened the box for the wonderful Music MP3 Rip-off® computer you bought at Gateway, the RIAA has been paid on both the hardware and software fronts.

If the RIAA doesn't sue them into limbo, karmic justice will have the Gateway Cow singing with the dodo bird in extinction.

    Peace.
