This might be a stupid question, but here goes. I just got new speakers. The kind with a powered sub-woofer. The best place on my desk for the sub-woofer is next to my external hard drive. Very close to it. Would this cause a problem with magnetic fields interfering with one another? Thanks in advance!:wings :wings :wings
i'm not sure about that...but how about this:
most subwoofer's i've seen have been on the floor, why don't you just put it there?

Because I have 2 large and very playful dogs. We try to keep fragile items OFF the floor!! :shy
well, because of the magnets in the speakers, i wouldn't recommend putting it right next to the hard drive...
we'll see if anyone else has any comments.

not a stupid question.
i wouldn't recommend it either... the drive's buffer might get messed up, the heads might get 'influenced' by the magnetic field, and make the drive mess up...
try to move the hard drive away. and if the speaker will be near your monitor, check it out. magnets + crt monitors = funky ass colors.

Thanks a lot folks! Just to be safe I'll move them. And Dealie, I'll bet a setup like you described rocks!!

I've got a giant sub sittin between my pc and monitor.. two smaller ones under the monitor. and a fat jbl sitting on top of the pc.
No problems yet and they've been that way for years.
If they are for the pc. they are usually better shielded than normal speakers are.
Either way.. I seriously doubt they will cause any problems.
Especially if your pc case is sheet metal.
I'd worry more about the monitor than the hard drive. Its way more sensitive to stray fields...
I'd worry more about your HD being close to your CRT (monitor) then next to a shielded sub...also unless the sub is 'fancy' with knobs everywhere I doubt the dog could do much damage. Other then a bit of chewing on the edges of the box itself. So unless it was over 50 bucks for the set....it's not that bad if the pup has a new chew toy. Cuz I doubt he'll be trying to get at it once you pump some loud music through it....lol my dogs freak at the sound...

I think you should move them...
There is no problem if you put them next to the HD. If this is the only place you can find there is no problem whatsoever. But for best quality bass put it on the floor like cpu said.
There are no magnets involved
I have had a sub woofer right behind my laptop screen for months and I haven't noticed any problems so I wouldn't worry about it. When I open up the laptop the back of the screen is touching the sub woofer. Of course it doesn't hurt to be safe and I don't want to be responsible for messing up your harddrive. If you can, just put it somewhere else.
