what are the advantages of hooking up your pc to a tv such as a plasma screen? or a big 52 inch wide tv screen? wouldn't the display on the tv you use be the monitor limit on your current monitor? like say if you have a 17" monitor and hook it up to a 21" tv, would it only allow you to display 17" format, or could it go to the 21?

you know you should really give linux a try. you know the funny thing about the l2cache on the old pentium 2 really didnt give me the power to do the multimedia stuff that a guy like me wants to do.
The new digital and plasma TVs and stuff can go up to much higher resolutions than regular TVs, so if you have one, I'd do it. You could watch divx movies on it etc. It would stretch to whatever the screen size, the monitor size has nothing to do with the rest of your settings or anything.

you never watched divx thru' tv-out? you don't know what you're missing. even with a normal crt, it looks great. bear in mind that dvds have a higher resolution than normal tvs too.
The plasma tv that i have has an ajustable inputs, the only problem is, the tv is in my den and my computer is on the other side of the house, so i havn't even tried it. I'll just stick to the "AOC" monitor that i have for watching my por., i mean d'loaded movies.

How do you connect your pc upto your TV? This would be sooo useful to me as previously i have been making vcds and svcds to watch my movies, which obviously is the tedious option as you have to wait hours for the encoding :mellow . Is it some type of special lead you need? i have newish 36inch tv. its a few rooms away too so id need a resonaly long cable. is it possible? :shy
well i've ordered a Leadtek Winfast Capture card so i think that might have a video out. im not sure if my geforce 3 or geforce 4 have tv outs though
nearly all newish graphics card have tv-out. you'd have to make an effort or be REALLY unlucky to get one without.
That's cuz, as isus pointed out (I don't know if it's THAT low, I was thinking 640x480 but I could be wrong), the resolution is a lot lower, and you can't see all the imperfections on a normal TV. You're right, it's pretty nice for movies though.Originally posted by mrlipring

Put it this way, you can save yourself buying a DVD player and upgrade your Video card to one that allows for TV out. I got this computer 2 years ago almost exactly and the video card had a TV-out, so it's not like it's a recent invention.
If anyone wants to buy it from me, I'll sell it for $30, it's a 64MB ATI 7000.

A televisions max res is 640x480 (interlaced)
Now there ARE adavantages to getting a tv out card, or purchasing/using your video cards tv out.
It will leave more then something to be desired if used for surfing the web trying to read text etc.
But where it will excell is in displaying DivX movies of questionable quality, and music videos/lower quality videos you have downloaded.
While having a higher res is usually perceived as being better, there are circumstances in which it isnt.
For instance, when watching a dvd rip from my pc on my television, It looks much cleaner(to a degree, if were talking near perfect rips the monitor may win out, but it still loks damned good on a tv screen), because the television isnt high enough resolution to display (or for one to notice) artifacting that occurs with much of the compressed video formats.
So, i would say go for it.
You wil be amazed at what a TV will do for video that you thought looked awfull on your monitor.

standard tv's don't use the computer resolution definitions. PAL = 625 lines, 50Hz
NTSC = 525 lines, 60Hz.
hdtv uses 725 lines(?)
computer resolutions get converted to tv lines
running games and movies through a crt tv is good, but for general computer useage, it sucks.
haven't tried plasma and lcd and hdtv, though.
I definately recommend it - i have had a setup for the last year or more - i use an ati radeon 7500 video card , my computer is in one room and i have run a cable to my video input on my 45 inch sony tv , so when i want to watch a divx movie or whatever format i just set it going on the computer press 1 button and it transfers the video output direct to the tv and the picture is stunning, if you download good rips the difference between dvd and divx / xvid is not worth mentioning, also you can get a wireless remote which connects to your computer to allow full video remote functions - i sold my dvd player 6 months ago and do everything via the computer - also if you download ac3 files and have a good audio card such as the soundblaster platinum series you can get it in full dolby 5.1.if you are clever ;)
Go for max performance - the higher the resolution capability of the video card the better tv picture you will get :) and you need at leat a p4 1.5 ghz for no synch problems - i have a 3.0 ghz system and the performance is superb :)

Yes the two are different, but measuring horizontal are vertical pixels is still measurement none the less.
