Sun OS 5.6 Security - April 28th, 2003, 11:30 PM

Hey guys,

Well in short i was recently handed a report by the agency that scans our networks for security and i have attached a list of vulenrabilities on my system gold.mdx.ac.uk

I was wondering how easy it would be for University Students to exploit them.......

Any ideas ?

First thing I would do is not post your scan results as an attachment. Don't post them at all. Too many valuable details.

For a detailed hacker, these scan results could be the ticket to exploiting your internet security facility (and giving up email addresses). It could be the blueprints for a possible attack, if there was one.

That goes for any internet forum, BTW.

As for the problem (and the solution(s)), you will need firewalls (at least a good Hardware-based one). Proxy servers would be helpful too.

I am giving general advice because I have no knowledge of SunOS or SunOS security. I've never worked with that OS.

Try to update your SunOS software with the latest build. The manufacturer (Sun Microsystems) has probably fixed some of the security bugs that exist in version 5.6.
