Getting rid of Overpeer - July 7th, 2002, 06:56 PM

It occured to me today that the solution to Overpeer and other RIAA users flooding the networks with fake files lies within the construction of P2P networks.

As we're seeing now with Gnutella clients, there is an option to block peers that are actually set up by the RIAA. But is blocking them really good enough?

I would say no -- the servers must be shut down altogether. That's where the miracle of P2P comes in.

The developers of a program could register complaints from users about problem users that are suspected of being corporate bots. The developer could evaluate the case, and if it seems to stand, send out data that would cause the ENTIRE NETWORK to launch a denial-of-service (DOS) attack on that user's IP.

Similarly, the tactic could also be used to launch DOS attacks on offending websites, such as the RIAA's website, artist websites, record label websites, and major CD retailers such as CDNOW.com or Amazon.com.

So you want to use P2P users computers to launch DOS attacks on others which is illegal.. Are you insane?

I doubt that users would like the fact that their PCs are beinging used for things like DOS attacks. Which are illegal and would IMHO only give the trade groups ammunation for a lawsuit... Its stupid to assume that the program wouldnt get sued for the damages of knocking off main websites like major cd retailers which you mentioned which the costs of damages would probably easily bankrupt a p2p company..

How does one control such a system so that its isnt exploited or misused to attack things like P2P sites or people who share the most files, program competitors and etc.

The best way to deal with this things like fake files to stoop to their level or is it better to build a better programs/networks where fake files wont be effective..

shareaza 1.3 has a new feature that actually verifies a file's content. "so you know its the right one" or something like that is what shareaza said.

"How does one control such a system so that its isnt exploited or misused to attack things like P2P sites or people who share the most files, program competitors and etc".

This is a good point. I have heard others talk about a moderater system being used like they use on slashdot. The only problem is the RIAA would flood/abuse this feature to confuse users (of p2p) by modding down perfectly good file/people.

As for the p2p being used for DOS. Well I would find it satisfing as I'm sure many of you would too, however it would bring the law enforment dudes onto the seen to shut p2p down faster then you can say "I never buy cds no more man"

As said before i think we should justt post songs or users that have these fake files. Long as people erase the files as they are DLed it'll be easier to keep track of these fake users. As for the DOS it would be fun and kinda satisfying but agreed with others it might hurt P2P networks. I already wrote an email to the makers of Overmind. If they want to think that is going to stop P2P RIAA and its croonies are getting desperate. I think they are feeling the pressures of consumers boycotting Cds. As for the RIAA taking legal action against personal users that's the most insane idea. you might find a weak minded person who would give in easily but find a true P2P supporter and they have a crisis on their hands. Cause if that person makes it public it's gonna be a media circus. My suggestions is we all email, mail letters, or even call Overmind makers as a showing of solidarity for P2p users and show we have a united front against them. "United we stand, Divived we fall."

I completely agree with you on this last point -- yes, it would be much better to have networks that were invulerable to attacks. But I don't see this as being possible.

My "solution" isn't a good one -- it's a short term, simple to implement way to give the RIAA a "taste of their own medicine," as Crazy Horse so nicely put it.
