i have a similar problem... - June 14th, 2002, 10:56 AM

this problem only started when i installed windows 2000.
the downloading speed is fine for quite a while, until say, the file is 50 % complete, then the speed will drop drastically from probably 100kbps to 0. For a few seconds. Sometimes it will stay at zero, and never recover agian. other times it will stay at zero for a few secons, before it suddenly jumps back to the original 100kbps.
the strange thing is, while the speed is 0, which is actually the total accumulated speed, the various users are actually sending data to me. e.g i'm downloading from 5 users, all of which are sending to me at random speeds ranging from 1 kbps to 15. but the total speed is 0.
I am a cable user too.

this problem has no relation with the problem i posted regarding the sudden disconnection of every sender in the forum.

winmx hicup - June 15th, 2002, 10:06 PM

I have noted the symptoms you are mention also. A few other p2p apps , namely blubster is even worse.
I am not informed enough to know technicly what is going on, but during those spasms, glitches or whatever you call it, it uses a lot of resources and basicly everything is stalling because of some sort of updating or whatever it is doing. It is something many people have noticed and I consider it a memory leak of some kind or at least a bug.
I have not heard if it is fixed with the updated winmx.
Basicly it is hogging your memory for a few moments and yes sometimes you can lose a weak connection during that time.
It usually clears up, but often after extended use it's a good idea to reboot.

Ive noticed the same thing from both winmx and kazaa. It happens when my hardrive is being pushed to hard. (Like many downloads and watching a movie) Its like the harddrive is just too backed up and has a traffic jam. This causes the CPU to max out... which leads to transfers timing out.
