Can't get DC++ to work in Active mode

I have made a concerted effort to get DC++ to work in active mode by enabling port fowarding on my Netgear router. But it doesn't seem to be working.

Problem: When running in active mode most of my req's return as "Connection Timed out" (yes I am running 0.22), when I change back to passive I get more files downloading and instead of getting the time out msg, I get "No slots available" which I think is a better message than a time out. I CAN get downloads and I have 6-8 uploads active.

INFO:

XP w/ firewall diabled.
Netgear router
Port fowarding set via Netgear admin interface.
Created a new service called DirectConnect with the correct IP, starting port = 375, ending port = 425.
DC++ has the same info in it's active settings with the port set to 375.

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it, and some other users probably would too!

I'm pretty sure DC++, by default, uses port 1214(it did in previous versions). In any event try that port and configure router and such accordingly.

Thanks Ken17625, I tried port 1214 but I get the same results. None of my downloads work, they all come back as "Timed Out". Switched back to passive and I am downloading again.

Perhaps this begs the question, is being in active mode really that important? I know I can't connct to another passive users.

Here's the deal--as long as searches work, you can be in active mode

timeouts are the achilles heel of dc++

i fix that with the old "force connect" in the 'ol right click menu

do it often and do it hard

take it from me, hub owner and dc veteran!

I hammer the damn thing until I get it, and I ALWAYS get it, eventually.

actually the downloads timing out is a well known bug with dc++, from what I heard continuosly forcing the connection will work in most cases, I never really payed close attention to any specific fixes for this problem but if you look through the dc++ forums you could probably find some help, and if you don't find anything related to it just post asking if anyone knows any way to help with the problem

Ok, I also read about the "Time out" issue in DC++ but I thought that v0.22 fixed this:

"Fixed a bug where dc++ would stop listening to incoming connections, causing connection timeouts in active mode "

If this is infact referring to my problem, I still get this in v0.22.

I can "hammer" the Forced Connection, but when in passive mode, it will retry until it works.

So, is it really that important to go Active (again, I know the problem making a passive-passive connection) but I have good results using DC++ passively. Not that if the benefit was significant I would not use the hammer method.

Well, I ran in Active mode using port 1214 for 24hrs and got nothing. I set it back to passive mode at lunch and checked it 5 min later and my downloads started up again.

I know there's not alot of info to go on, but I can play online gaming (Q3) without a problem.

maybe your isp is port blocking/throttling the ports you use

pick a completely off the wall one like 9516 or 8501 and try that for 24 hours

I don't think it's 1214, I believe it's 1412

- Open up port 412 and 1412 on your firewall.

- If you're on a network, you'll need to forward these ports to your local IP address.

- Make sure your external IP address (the one found at whatismyip.com) is entered in Direct Connect.

Hey notbob, how many gigs do you need to share to join your HUB?
I have never had issue with connecting in active mod and in terms of the time outs I do get them sometime but as notbob mention some people just disconnect you or its a firewall issue so force connect works wonderfully.

Ok, I started this thread because I couldn't get Active Mode to work, and I thought others might come along with the same problem and want to see some help.

So here's what I was doing wrong: (I'm a big dummy who doesn't know much about networking)

I entered the IP address of my machine on the network at home (192.168.0.2) NOT my router's IP on the internet (oh yeah, that other network). Now that I have gotten active mode to work, I have noticed my downloads have sped up some (perhaps unrelated).

Thank you cmyden for your post, I went to www.whatismyip.com and instantly realized my error. Thanks to all! Hopefully this thread will/has helped others.

Ok I know blue has fixed his/her problem but I wanted to mention what I had to do incase anyone needs to know. I had to go into my router settings ( linksys ) and get my WAN ip address and force DC to report to that address. Also I went to my routers advanced settings and had ports 400-420 set to my comp. It was a little bitch having to look up my WAN ip address everyday and changing it in my DC settings since it changed frequently. Also when I wanted to d/l something on my roomates comp I have to reconfigure all the settings i just told you about. Nither of which was a big problem but it was a hassle. It worked though and thats all that matters.
