WinMX and my ol' 56k modem - June 5th, 2002, 07:37 AM

Hello there. I have recently downloaded and clean installed the latest WinMX, uninstalling the previous version. I have a 56k PCMCIA Psion Dacom card laptop modem. I connect to the net at a consistant 50.666 kbps. I can download most files from various sources anywhere regularly at an average of 5.0kb/s. KaZaA often yields d/l's around 4.5kb/s. I have noticed that with WinMX, my downloads never get above 3kb/s at any time of the day or night. As I dont surf whilst I am downloading, what settings should I have in the bandwidth /throttling tabs to improve this. Often a person who downloads from me shows up to 4.7kb/s. I have checked out quite a few FAQ's for the correct settings, but they all seem to refer to faster cable/adsl connections. Many thanks for any advice...cheers Chris

I have used modem "boosters" to tweak registry settings(maxMTU RWIN TTL, etc.) but their suggested settings seem to be optimised more for http. .

Optimising settings for maximum downloads is really a trial and error routine, there is no one set that will give maximum speed in all conditions and with all networks.

Since your WinMX download speed is subpar, I suggest trying applications like Tweakmaster or SpeedConnect (always back up the registry before you change settings) and try a few different setting combinations. These apps let you try various settings, unlike some others (TweakXP comes to mind) that only give one single "optimized" setting.

This requires a little bit of work and experimentation but I believe that you should be able to increase your WinMX download speed to 5 K without sacrificing too much web speed.

Thanks ston, I will investigate some of the tweaking progams, or I may even reinstall 2.6 as that was better :-) Cheers Chris
