Portable player that can play DVDs full of MP3s (4.7GB) - December 10th, 2002, 02:13 PM

In short, the new MPDAP20U is a portable battery operated CD-RW /DVD-ROM/Memory Stick combo drive. It looks likes a regular portable CD player, but its much more. The new MPDAP20U is the next generation of portable CD-burners that can also play music while not connected to a computer. Such devices appeal to laptop users and your typical gadget fanatic.

This device came out at just the right time. Just about anyone would be more than thrilled to receive this as a gift. The device is just so versatile. You can play music (from CD or Memory Stick), burn CD’s, and watch DVDs. The drive itself is very slim so it shouldn’t be a problem to take with you anywhere.

24X max. CD-R Burning, 8X max. DVD-ROM Reading
Battery Powered capability
USB 2.0 and 1.1 compatable
Up to 10 hours (MP3), 1.5 hours (DVD video)
Up to 9 full hours CD-R or 7 hours CD-RW discs can be recorded on a single full battery

According to:

http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/...P20UManual.pdf

The MPD-AP20 can read MP3s from DVD-R/RW discs. That's 4.7 GIG of music on one disk (about 60 CDs using Variable Bit Rate MP3 encoding). From page 33 of the user guide, "You can play back the following disks and files with the drive...Music files written to DVD-R/DVD-RW (MP3, WAV files)"

Cool. That Discman sounds sweet. It may even have the capabilities to beat the Apple IPod in storage capacity (in the long run). It probably costs overall less to own one of those too (well maybe eventually).
