You're all wrong, subtitles can be colored in by having the software compare frames and paint in the subtitle. Its not 100% but at least you have a somewhat accurate representation of what would be in the frame.
You need to download Virtual Dub http://www.virtualdub.org/ Then the filter http://compression.ru/video/subtitle.../index_en.html I've used virtualdub quite a bit so I can probably explain some of its functions, never used this filter so you will have to play around with it or do your own research to see what works best.
