I too had that problem at first StealthStrike! It was really annoying, all my old AoE tactics resulted in my own destruction every time (try a cavalry rush of 15 units on an enemy castle... while their defences are killing you and the castle is shooting you, you get my point). I also got really tired of those fucking enemy trebuchets that would level my civ every single time.
I then turned away and went back to play AoE for a long time, until there was nothing more to be done in that game (I still love that music though). I gave AoE II another shot and found out that it's actually a much better game, it just takes a little bit of practise at the beginning. Nowadays it's still challenging because it's so hard and you can't have just 1 tactic. I play hard with 3 enemy players who are allied. Sometimes the only chance I have is to try to get as many relics in the beginning... then when I have an initial walled in camp and just enough resources to repair after a striking blow from the enemy, I start building an overkill quick assault army to take down enemy monasteries, steal their relics and be out of the place... I then have a more steady supply of gold and the game really begins!
Give it a second chance.
