Struggling for dvd playback - October 25th, 2007, 01:59 AM

Damn...I hope someone can help me out. ALL I want is to be able to play my burned DVD's on my home (external) DVD. I've been looking at Roxio 7. If I buy and DL that ($19.99), will it play on any dvd player (not just my PC). Help! Something so simple has gotten me frazzled...

Sorry, I use Nero. Nero is what most people use on Windows PCs!

But, I think you had created another thread on this subject already. To be sure your burned DVDs will play on DVD player(s), make sure you also have burned DVD finalized since lots of DVD players can't play multi-sessions CD/DVD disks. This will makes it more compatible with all DVD players.

yes, all my DVD's finalized. When I put a burned DVD in a player, tv screen says that disc does not have playback option. I thought that meant that I can burn but not play. Could that be bc I have Vista Basic Home? All I wanna do is play videos on my big tv!!! THANKS for your help...

What program were you using? Also, did you check your DVD player settings on playback?

Question Vista Windows Explorer - July 12th, 2008, 10:44 AM

Hey, I'm prob not posting this in the right place but here goes...very time I go to Control Panel, I get the message "Windows Explorer has stopped working", then "Windows Explorer is restarting". About the same time this started happening, I got a pop-up of "Anti Virus Master" (or AVM). It took over my computer and I couldn't delete it or un-install it because its not listed in "Programs and features". I wrote to AVM and asked them "what the hell''? They wrote back and said it wasn't their fault but they gave me 3 free days of AVM so that I could delete it...still it doesn't show in the programs list. How do I get my Control Panel back? I did a system restore (I can get into parts of Control Panel indirectly). I don't know what to do!!!!

Nuke from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Format / Install OS / Apply all updates / Tweak UI to your liking. Then create an image and store it offline.

Aside from that, do you have an nVidia card? If so, make sure you're using the latest drivers. There was a Vista / nVidia driver incompatibility issue some months ago that affected access to the control panel.

Most commercial burning software is designed to make compliant DVD-R's. Just be sure to use a "wizard" if available to avoid any confusion. Ditch it when you're comfortable with burning your movies. As for compatibility, that would be dependent upon two things: the type of media you use and the type of standalone player. This involved a lot more trial and error about five years ago. Most players these days, including el cheapo's will play just about anything without a hiccup. And you can buy quality discs dirt cheap. I wouldn't sweat it.
