BitTorrent Tracker Music Quantity Comparison - October 24th, 2007, 03:35 AM

It is difficult to compare the amount of music available on a torrent tracker site. I have collected some numbers that I found interesting.

TPB has ~85092 music torrents
the pirate bay.org/brwsearch.php?c=101&d=0&orderby=&page=2837
However only ~52430 of toughs torrents have seeds at this time.
the pirate bay.org/brwsearch.php?c=101&d=0&orderby=se&page=1748
(30 torrents per page)

Demonoid on the other hand has 90,609 music torrents however only 46,371 are being seeded at the time of this post.
demonoid .com/files/?category=2&subcategory=All&quality=All&seeded=2&e xternal=2&query=&uid=0&sort=

The next two runners up that I know of are:
http://www.softmp3.org/
http://www.stmusic.org/
Both of these sites have about the same amount of music with about ~10,000 torrents.

Oink.cd had in the neighborhood of 200,000 music torrents. However Oink does not allow discographies! So by looking at these numbers it is *possible* that TPB or Demonoid has *more* music than oink did, but we know this is not true. Also these numbers do not account for duplicates. Even oink had duplicates when it came to different encodings.

Even though oink.cd is down, people that have downloaded the music are still around. These people will invariably join another tracker community to share their music. So even though oink is dead, the warez will live on. Personally now that Oink has died I have fallen back on TPB, Demonoid and soulseek.

Peace out.

"Best" is nearly always a relative term. IMHO there is no "best", if they have what I want, when I want it, then they are the current "best" of the moment.

Government cannot give anything to anybody unless it takes it away from somebody else, and when it does this it uses force and coercion in violation of the rights of those from whom it takes. The political state -- interventionist government -- cannot bestow any benefit to society as a whole -- it can only take from some and give to others, minus the overhead absorbed by the administering bureaucracy.

Both softmp3 and stmusic are scene release only. Neither allow home rips. Without home rips, you'll never find the depth of selection you'd find at Oink.

If either one decided to allow home rips, I think you could, given enough time, see something along the lines of an Oink. Until either site changes direction, though, neither of these has any chance of becoming the next Oink.

Music is subjective.

I can honestly say that I have let two (on my third) STMusic just fade away to inactivity, due to them never having what I am looking for (George Michael- Five Live, case in point).

IMHO, it was Dime before OiNK and it remains my "best" music tracker.

I just took a few minutes to go through my music trackers to see if any has the potential for Oinkness.

What I'm encountering is that Oink was so big, everyone seems to have carved their niche outside of the Oink universe. Everything is highly specialized.

Out of my list of 20 trackers only 2 are non-specialized and allow home rips- libble and funkytorrents. Both are really small and, from what it looks like, in no rush to grow. Libble just went invite only (Coincidence?). I also notice that their donation goals are in pounds. Not a good sign.

Maybe it's just as good that there isn't an immediate replacement for Oink. All the other trackers are small, but they'll grow pretty quickly and you should see new trackers rearing their heads as well. 30 medium size trackers are lot less vulnerable than one huge one.

The only one with oink potential is stmusic.org

60,000 users, triple that of softmp3s.

A shitload of oinkers are already there and they are opening up user uploads.

By far the only one close to becoming the new oink, i recommend signing up before they close off signups and turns into oink.

I am thinking you may well be right!
7,096 files.
10,592 members/ 11,000 max.
They have 2,250 torrents just in rock and blues alone... stuff I like!
YaaY!!

I had forgotten about this tracker and had been disabled (at some point) for inactivity.
Many thanks! By far is looking to be right there with Dime (for my taste)!

Funky Torrents has one big downside- the forums are in Russian. Without English speaking forums, you'll never have Oink's level of community- a big part of what Oink was. A while back, I asked what I thought to be a pretty difficult question in Oink's forums and, within a day, I had 10 really well thought out answers/solutions.

STMusic has already coded their site to include a new user upload section (that was quick). In an effort to appease existing members, though, they've separated user uploads from scene releases. In essence, they created a brand new tracker. Right now it has 150 files. This new policy is a move in the right direction, but I think STMusic is a long way away from becoming the next Oink.

As much as everyone would like a clear cut path to follow (I know I would), I think we're still a ways away from anything definitive. I think a week might help help fill in some details. The uncertainty can't last forever, though. Nature abhors a vacuum- this is, imo, the black hole of filesharing.

We should definitely be using more than 1 tracker...

However funkytorresnts users do speak english.. Most of them... If you post they will answer.

They are also setting it up more for english as we speak. The admin over there has been very helpful.

Can't believe the Funkytorrents registration is at its peak! Is indietorrents.com a dead site now by the way? All I get when i go there is a storm cloud.
