Question How do I add ace file to share list? - May 27th, 2002, 07:01 AM

When adding archive files like ace or arj, you know that you can have a lot of files... My question is how do you add automaticaly several ace file like c01, c02, c03 etc... without typing all of them in the shared file types...

Thanx for your help!

A dedicated WinMX French user....

This is the biggest gripe I have with WinMX.

You are limited to adding only 16 file extensions in the box under Shared File Types. This is not nearly enough to cover all file extensions that you might want to share.

One work-around to this problem is to create archives of the files. You can create a single archive file that contains all the multiple parts. You can also create archive files out of any additional file extensions that exceed the 16 extension limitation.

But I think it is really a waste of time to even try sharing other non-media file types. Because most users don't know that they have to manually input every file extension to share, so these files do not get spread through the WinMX network.

I think WinMX really screwed up in this regard. Why couldn't they just have allowed the entire folder to be shared, regardless of filetype, like most other P2P apps do?

I'd agree that not simply including all items in a shared folder seems like a big oversight. Also don't like how you have to manually unshare folders you delete. I'm constantly moving around files I get into folders, deleting and creating folders for appropriate stuff (for example, a diablo2 folder, which I recently deleted when I noticed people were uploading what they thought was the full game when it wasn't). It's a pain in winMX to constantly be deleting these non-existant folders by hand.

However, the exclusion of all the file extension types seems like such a big oversight, I'd have to say it might have been intentional. Trying to limit the scope of what winMX is going to be used for. Just a random theory on my part tho.

I think WinMX was probably originally patterned after Napster (which only allowed mp3 files) and then added some additional filetypes as an afterthought. WinMX seems to try to discourage users from trading non-media filetypes. While sharing of all other file types is possible, it is difficult.
