iPod Options... Are there too many? - September 5th, 2007, 08:38 PM

Gizmodo has a point: With so many 'new' iPod variations, have they overloaded themselves?

For the uninformed, here's the quick summary (in US dollars):
- iPhone, via AT&T, $399
- iPod classic, 80GB and 160GB, $249 and $349
- iTouch, 16GB and 8GB, $299 and $399
- iPod nano, 4GB (single color) and 8GB (various colors), $149 and $199
- iPod Shuffle, (different variety of colors) 1GB, $79

So, which is it for you? Or none at all? Or how about a Zune or Creative Zen or any other mp3/video playin' device?

I know there are a lot of Apple haters out there, and a lot of Apple fanboys too, but please, keep your stupid hatin' comments outta my thread.

I already have the 5th gen 80GB ipod video and, of course, they have a revamped model out soon - ipod touch. Looks cool, but I'm happy with my ipod now. It does everything I want it to do.

I don't like apple. But damn these new ipods are sexy. I am probably going to get a ipod classic. It looks fantastic. 80 gigs for the same price of the last gen 30 gig? that's awesome :)

I loved the IPhone price drop. I would probably have 2 right now if AT&T wasn't the only carrier. I just can't bring myself to pay a service that blatantly abuses peoples privacy.

I think there is quite a selection now which is awesome but I'll end up just sticking to my 2 GB nano until the carriers open up or change.

It seems like a case of "built in" obsolesence run amok or a marketing tactic that plays on some people's obsession with having the most recent, fully loaded gadget either way Apple can count me out. I don't have or want(although if I won one in a give away I would accept it)Ipod device.

I am more a Zen, Creative or generic 'No Name' kinda guy.

I want a red shuffle. Why? They're light, and all I want the thing to do is hold the best of the best of my music, and not affect my weaving on rollerblades around all the schmucks walking.

And I like red.

But I don't believe the shuffle to be worthy of the e2c's. Maybe I need some decent-quality-but-inexpensive headphones.

P.S. Did anyone else notice that the forum time is FINALLY correct?

I will probably be getting both a 16GB iTouch (iPod Touch) and a product(red) shuffle as well. I already have a Samsung SYNC with ATT, and I don't feel like paying $20 a month extra for a data plan that gives me dial up speeds. When I'm not in my car, there's usually a hot-spot around anyway. I work in a mall, and the movie theatre I work at is within distance of Apple's (open) wifi hotspot from the Apple Store. So that works.

As for the (red) shuffle, I always wanted to support the charity thing, but it will be a nice alternative to bringing a $400 flashy gadget that screams "steal me" to the gym if I ever start going again. But yeah.

Oh and potato... the iPod Classic 160GB is $349, not 399. Just a helpful hint :)

My current setup stats (like anyone cares...):

ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard
AMD 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
Windows Vista (Ultimate 32bit)
2 GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS RAM
2x250 GB (in RAID 0) HDDs
EVGA GeForce 7950 GTX 512 MB
Creative X-FI Fatal1ty XtremeGamer

Also sporting a black MacBook
Revision/Release 1
Upgraded to 2GB RAM.

I have a 5th generation iPod that I was thinking about getting one of the new ones. I am kind of disappointed they only did the touch interface with flash storage. I listen to alot of podcasts on my ipod and since I like to have all the episodes the space is starting to run out.

Other than the price the shuffle sucks, you can't even select a song, the lowest nano would be better IMO than a shuffle because the price isnt that high for a mp3 player and you get 4 times more the storage than a shuffle.

I chose the shuffle because it's tiny and incredibly light. When I'm exercising, anything larger would drive me nuts.

But for any kind of regular usage, I'd definitely go after the nano.

See, I don't think I need every piece of media with me at all times. Sure, the variety is great but it's kind of unnecessary.

Guess it depends on what you use it for.

I've got an iPod Shuffle and it's fine for me. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has no display.

I've got an older model - one of the 3" long white ones and it lets me play song "shuffle" or "play in order" mode.

I use WinAmp to manage the music (iTunes BLOWS). I can create a play list, load it onto the Shuffle, and then print out the play list so I know what songs are loaded. I mainly use it in my car - I just plug it into my car stereo.

I don't really need a large storage capacity - 1GB is plenty for me. I store my tunes on my hard drive (and back up on an external hard drive) and just load new songs on the Shuffle once a week or so.

NOT having thousands of songs stored on it is actually pretty convenient - I don't have to scroll through a large music library looking for one or two songs/albums to play.

So the Shuffle fits my need perfectly. I love it. Again, the only thing I don't like is that it has no display, but I can live with that by printing out the play list.

I have a 30 gig video, with the clock turned off to save battery and the battery still doesn't last long. So i can only imagine how fast a touch will die.
And while apple is adding features like being able to have a touch screen mp3 player they forgot some stuff. Like a radio. and a wireless transmitter.

I think I may go to the dark side and buy either an iPhone or an iPod Touch soon... I like the idea of browsing the web as such and listening to some music or something... who knows?

"There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17... I been sayin' that shit for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your ass. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherfucker before you popped a cap in his ass. But I saw some shit this mornin' made me think twice… The truth is you're the weak. My 1st gen nano crapped out on me not too long ago. It was good timing I guess since the announcement of new iPods was known to be only weeks away. I was convinced I'd be buying what would be revealed as the iPod Touch, but when they announced the iPhone price drop I had second thoughts. I ended up picking up an iPhone.

Best $399 I've ever spent.
