utorrent 1.7.1 Bad? - July 16th, 2007, 06:13 PM

Got this PM from a private tracker:

-----------------------------MASS PM TO ALL MEMBERS--------------------

µtorrent 1.7.1 has now been banned from (private tracker). The new version contains a feature that sends your IP and upload/download information to the MPAA and the RIAA

We suggest that any member using this software immediately removes it from their computers and downgrade to µtorrent 1.6.1 which can be found at the link below.

Any truth to this? I'm still using 1.6.1 thank goodness.

Just checked on some of my other private trackers, it's been banned on them as well.

I would really like to believe it. Really I would.

The fact is... utorrent was bought out by anti-p2p interests after version 1.6.1 came out. Everything after that is highly suspect. There's not a chance in hell that an anti-p2p entity is going to buy out a client and NOT eventually incorporate some form of DRM into it. To think otherwise would be incredibly naive.

A lot of people recommend sticking to 1.6.1, but I'm not even sure that's a good idea. What would stop utorrents owners from swapping out the version of 1.6.1 on their site with a spyware version? If you own 1.6.1 from before the takeover, sure, or if you can get it from a reliable source, fine, but I wouldn't download anything from utorrent.com. Not at this point.

I love 1.6.1 and never want to let it go, but the cold hard reality is that it's days are numbered. The moment anti-p2p interests got their grubby little hands on it, utorrent's fate was sealed.

Btw, I'm seeing a lot of people using 1.7x in private trackers. This is of tremendous concern to me. You can make it as hard as you want for members to join, but if you've got existing members using a client that's reporting outside the tracker... your members are screwed.

Well, it is important to see the evidence, like logs of all network activity on a test computer, and capturing packets from it to see what they contain.

There are other reasons for companies monitoring peer to peer. Whether they say it or not, torrent statistics are valuable information to them, useful hot-or-not ranks of how popular TV and movies are doing, what kind of buzz is out there.

Yes I did let my µtorrent update without knowing about this, and I've seen at least 1/3 of the µtorrent users in swarms have also. One new feature I think is great is NAT-PMP, it got me through a router firewall that Upnp didn't work woof with, because apparently there were too many hops through switches to allow regular Upnp.

dont believe everything you read, its pretty clear the developers are trying to make a solid little program, it would be purely suicidal to put in place 'call home' features not to mention would cause a huge scandal

i like it but i am having a problem, when i minimize or close it, its not showing up in the tray. ill try a clean install and see how we go

Hers a new PM from the private tracker I got the first one from:

----------------------MASS MEMBER PM----------------

I have been checking packets sent from µtorrent 1.7.1 for the past few hours now, and I cannot find anything that states that anything is being reported to any authorities. I am therefore removing the ban on µtorrent 1.7.1. One of our staff has also spoken to one of their Development team. I am still yet to discuss finer details and concerns with this particular developer but all signs are looking good.
The measure of banning 1.7.1 was taken to assure the safety of our members until such proof could be found to discount these allegations

µtorrent 1.7 will remained banned due to problems with bugs that report false stats to the tracker.

If my other privates follow suit, then I'll be rest assured!

I think a few of you are missing the point.

A deal has been made with the devil. Utorrent is indirectly owned by the RIAA/MPAA.

Do you really think they're going to put out a client that continues to help people to steal their stuff?

A little common sense goes a long way in this issue.
