Do Xbox 360s Scratch Discs? -
July 14th, 2007, 08:08 AM
Just days after Microsoft Corp. took a more than US$1 billion earnings charge to fix hardware problems in Xbox 360 consoles, a class-action suit says that the consoles also damage game discs.
Filed on Monday in the U.S. District court for the Southern District of Florida, the suit claims that Xbox 360s scratch game discs, making them unusable. Thousands of people have been affected by and have complained to Microsoft about the problem, the suit claims. While Microsoft hasn't yet evaluated the suit, it says it hasn't heard a significant number of complaints. "Out of the millions of Xbox consoles in use, Microsoft has not received any widespread reports of Xbox 360s scratching discs," said Jack Evans, a Microsoft spokesman, in a statement. Read entire story here. No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of copyright based on the noncommercial use by a consumer for making digital musical or analog musical recordings. |

Well, I'd say that the problem is widely spread, as it is mentioned in Wikipedia!

answer: emphatically YES!
at my work i have had lots of returns with very circular scuffs around the outer ring of the disk. there is no way that each of these random customers could have done it the same way without the aid of a machine... such as an xbox. |

Yes it can scratch CDs, I remember one of the tech sites tested it out and figured out what causes it exactly, the cd gets scratched on the edge of the DVD-Drive lens causing it to get scratched.
The only way this occurs if someone moves the console while playing a game. In the 360 box there was a warning label saying don't move the console while in use. I don't think this guy has much of a case. But MS should try to change the drive so even if someone is dumb enough to move the console while its on it won't scratch the disc. I looked through all 8 of my 360 discs, and not one of them has a scratch on the disc. |

My first PS2 had a similar problem, but I think it was either due to the vertical standing or the speed of the blue PS2 discs. It could have been hardware too. They wanted an ass-amount to fix it so I just got a new one. No problems since and that was about 4 years ago.

This happened to my cousin the day day Fable 2 came out. I personally will wait until the console is perfected (Last release of the console) before I get one. That way I know all that could be done to fix it, plus a built in Blu-Ray, has happened and I can enjoy the games to the fullest.

face it if you adopt early you will get bugs, if you wait for a while youll get a stabilized product and you wait for perfection you'll never buy anything this isnt aimed at shanago- we should expect a 100% working out the box product but these days life aint like that- release first patch later is the norm for both hardware and software deal with it :devil2 |

I had my first disc scratched when I first got the system. There was a sticker affixed to the front so I picked it up to read it while Halo 3 was in and it said not to move the system while the game was it and the next thing I know there were some pretty bad scratching sounds and I immediately ejected and found the game scratched up. The other time was when my drunk friend kicked the xbox.
What I want to know is what are you people doing to get your discs scratched? the xbox360 is pretty stable unless you move it while the disc is spinning. Let me google that for you! Read this before begging for invites Private Tracker-How To Guide |

Yeah, i be pissed to if i didnt take the appropriate measures into keeping games saved on my external drive, the good ones i save in case it scratches it. Its a shame it does it in the first place.. Verbatim disc arent cheap. 20 of the dual layer cost 26.00 from newegg.com

Absolutely nothing other than play it. It was sitting up on the shelf in my entertainment unit (all by itself, so no vibrations from speakers or etc...) and all of a sudden the game froze and the 360 made a loud noise. The 360 got reset at the menu came up, but it kept saying it could not read the disc. Opened the drive and sure enough, it was scratched all around the center of the disc.

THe new NXE update allows you to backup your games on the hard drive so you can launch from their without having a disc. Allows for faster loading times too!

Well, a lot of people have scratched discs.
I scratched my COD4, and well, it pissed me off, and it was after about 6 hours of usage with the game? Anyway, at that time, my 360 was VERTICAL. The Dick Smith (Australian store) guy said that I should put my 360 horizontal, to prevent future scratching, after I took my 360 there. And after all this time, nothing has happened to any of my discs. I swear my Halo 3 has been in there for AGES. So, hopefully that will fix some problems. |
