Which P2P networks are the safest? - June 26th, 2007, 05:22 PM

Seems lately torrent sites are being targetted more and more. Just wondering which P2P networks(aside obviously from private torrent sites) are the safest from the point of view of being the target of RIAA/MPAA and safest from a technical point of view(being monitored etc). I've used Emule for a while now and though it is somewhat slow, it seems fairly safe and it does have some of the rarest things I've ever looked for. I haven't heard much about anyone being prosecuted on that network except some people in Spain. How safe is the Edonkey network? What about others like Limewire, DC++, etc?

Simple answer is none of them, except private ones.

Not even them. See Private Trackers will try to thrive on the fact that the less the people know about them the better. But in the end they become popular. If Popular Public Trackers get taken down, then things won't be so rosy for the private one's either.

Trading of invites is that why discouraged by private trackers "Invite only people you personally know" is their motto, but we know what happens right ?

None of them are safe actually. The MPAA/RIAA have been known to set up hubs to gain access to emule and edonkey. They come in and take over torrent sites. The only place you are currently safe if using a newsreader. There is a guide on Slyck to help you through the start up process. You can download and post there anonomously. If you get a server with a high retention- 101 or 120 days, you will be able to find almost anything that has been posted. I do like the new version of Azureus- it has a plugin to run the blocklists to keep out snoopers. But still with BitTorrent your IP is still out there. That leads you to proxy servers. One thing you can do is use TOR with Azureus to protect your IP address or pay for a service like Findnot. This is a great idea, but you will always appear to not be yourself- bad if you do banking or have cookies enabled.

charlesmelissa, most GOOD private sites offer anonymous connection for people who have proved themselves to the tracker. True its not available for everyone, but if your dling enough to be worried, you will make it to that level soon enough.

I started downloading with Napster and I joined many of the private sites before they were private. I saw that the person asking was new so I answered at a newbie level. As far as anonymous connections- after the Lokie betrayal of the users and his mass turn over of information to the MPAA/RIAA, I am very suspect of any connections. Any site you go to, the MPAA/RIAA have spies. They get on by trading invites. Even Irc/mIRC is not safe- do you know what your friends/contacts really work? Call me paranoid, but I pride myself on staying one step ahead of any lawsuits. I am not dissing you, I am just saying I play it safe, but can still get what I want. I learned 20 years ago you can't even trust your wife. Trust should be developed face to face, not in a chatroom or on a board. There are people from all over the world loging into all of the sites and no one knows all of them. I guess for most of my downloads I follow the white rabbit down the rabbit hole. . .

Your best bet is to illegally immigrate to canada and u can share as much as u want and not have to worry about it and u will never lose sleep over it ever again.

And start a new life living in your high tech igloo, these things are amazing nowadays, we recently got dialup internet, and now i gotta go catch my SUPPER.

I've generally not been all that concerned about downloading stuff because I've mostly only been interested in old foreign films that most people haven't even heard of -- I can't really picture MPAA coming after me for downloading some old Czech or Korean flick from like 1950. But I admit lately I was a bit more concerned with all the sites being raided for the rare times I do download something more popular. I will just use obscure less popular sites for these.

Well why didn't you say what you were looking for!!!! One of my favorite sites is http://www.publicdomaintorrents.com/ . It is a free site and it only has movies that are now in the public domain. I lot of the movies you just described are now in the public domain- the copyright was not renewed fere or abroad. They are free to download and collected in one place. Most of the B&W's are there, and a lot of color ones, even up until about 20 years ago. John Wayne movies if you like him, how about Nosfaratu "the original Dracula," Invasion of the Body Snatchers, lots of the old stuff. Don't worry about the MPAA there!
