A quick 30 second search on Google for "History of Usenet" gave me this link:

Usenet has been around for a long time. It's not a site, or sites. Think of it more like a massive worldwide distributed email server.
It was originally used as just a system to send simple text messages to any server and have those messages eventually populate to every server in the network. Then some people got the idea that they could just convert binary files into text, post it to a Usenet newsgroup and then anyone connected to any server that offered the group could convert the text back into a binary. That is the true power of Usenet, the ability to propagate an encoded binary file around the world, to any server that offers the group, all from a single upload/post of a file. This of course is drastically different in scope from the most popular sharing program right now. With Bittorrent the only way for a file to continue to spread is if the people who have the file maintain an active connection and continue seeding the data to peers. With Usenet the original releaser only needs to upload the file once and it is spread automatically by the network of Usenet servers that offer the group. The interesting effect that results from this method is that anyone who just downloads really needn't worry about the occasional gutbustingly funny dmca notice showing up in their mailbox or the dreaded call from their Isp. The simple fact is that unlike bittorrent or other fs programs you do not upload! There is no ratio counter and you are expected to leech, though it's always nice to share some of your own favorite files. Uploading/sharing to other bittorrent users, or to users of other programs like DC++, Emule, or Kazaa is what gets people in trouble, sued, or causes them to lose their connection. They say "this guy shared this file over 200 times". An uploader to Usenet only uploads a file once. An individual who only downloads has no detrimental effect on the community. My Isp offers access to Usenet at speeds that max out my connection every second for free (i.e. nothing beyond the normal bill). So I would look into whether your Isp offers Usenet access before you look into pay servers. The easiest way to do this is go to your Isp's website and search for NNTP, usenet, or newsgroups. Usually that will bring you to their news server settings. A new user to newsgroups will be well served trying out the newest version of Grabit and reading the guide to Usenet newsgroups in my signature below The newest version of Grabit eliminates most of the difficulties people have in first attempting to access the great resources of Usenet. It offers automatic repairs of files and automatic extraction once the files have been verified. This is all done in the background while you are downloading. It also has some limited search and browse functionality with the free download. These features allow you to search and browse groups without needing to download all of the headers. This makes the current version of grabit function much like a filesharing program for new users and offers a great tool for speeding up searches for specific material for vets. Opening up the browse and search functions to full capability requires payments of different levels depending on length of service time purchased and if you wanted their newsserver too or not. |

god damn it... you guys forgot rule #1
since the cat is outta the bag how about using a search engine to find out? btw public usenet servers typically suck ass so don't feel too bad if all you find is crap at uber slow speeds www.dakota-fanning.org www.elle-fanning.net |
