Wink Wanna Know what the RIAA fears? - November 16th, 2002, 03:38 PM

The RIAA is not afraid of any "equal" and anything you do that is blantantly illegal will only add fuel to their fire.
The RIAA is afraid of the DMCRA, a bill introduced by Rep.'s Boucher and Doolittle that will bring back the Betamax standard for determining what constitutes fair use. "significant noninfringing uses" is the standard
This bill has an excellent chance of being enacted in the 108th Congress.
If this bill is enacted and P2P software is capable of "significant noninfringing uses" then the RIAA will have a much, much more difficult time fighting to shutdown sites. This means more established sites that aren't in danger of shutting down every few months.
NOW THE IMPORTANT PART
Courts and legislatures care a lot about survey evidence.
If all P2P users will simply download some music from artists that have authorized the distribution, then the evidence for the noninfringing uses will mount.
This doesn't mean only download legal files. Significant doesn't even have to be half, only an appreciable amount.
It doesn't matter if you just download the songs and then delete them.
JUST DOWNLOAD SOME LEGAL STUFF, this plus the Boucher Bill will give Hillary Rosen a stroke.

The Consumer Technology Bill of Rights is a Joint Resolution introduced into the House by Rep Cox and the Senate by Sen. Wyden.
The bill is almost too good to be true and therefore to pass but letting your Rep.'s and Senators know you support it will give it a shot and help any similar bills pass in the future.
