Poor Download Speeds

Hello

I get average download speeds of between 20 and 30kB/s and upload speeds of between 20 and 30kB/s

I am running uTorrent 1.6.1. on a winXP home system with SP2

I have a download speed of about 2Mb and upload speed of about 250kB/s from my ISP (tiscali). I have forced encryption.

I have a little green icon at the bottom of the uTorrent window and am assuming that I don't have a NAT error.

I am hard wired to a belkin router. I have forwarded 1 port. I have set uTorrent to only run 1 torrent at a time.

I have set my upload rate at 185kB/s.

I also run a third party firewall and have opened the port on that.

I have read the guide on this site (it's how I got to the forum) and don't see what else I could do to improve speeds.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Play with uTorrent settings a bit. Try to adjust to more connections with peers & open more slots with peers! The reason, most torrents have more peers than seeders. Good luck, it may take a little while to find the best settings.

I have changed the the connection settings as you have suggested. Both increasing and decreasing them. However my download speeds seem to have gotten worse while my upload speeds have improved a bit. :(

I should note that all the changed I have made are on a current 4.06GB download. Even so with 30% downloaded my share ratio is at 1.101. I am also downloading from an open to everyone torrent site (no invite needed).

Am I being overly ambitious to want the download to take less than the 2 days stated by uTorrent?

I've 1G RAM & My max. global connections is set at 800 & 300 per torrent which is higher than suggested. However, I don't use encryption as you. If you have a good computer, with a broadband connection try to increase max. connections until you get the best settings. Some torrents have very few seeders which take longer to download, but in this case peers can help each other! See if you can connect to more peers, if possible.

I have a little more RAM than you. I have put my settings to the ones you have and have disabled encryption. As yet no changes - I'll keep you posted.

I must be honest - I am finding Bittorrent not to be the wonderful world of reasonable and sensible downloading that I had previously thought it to be. Oh well disillusionment is part of life I guess.

I am going to give Usenet a try after this. I think that paying a small amount of money for easy regular downloads makes a lot of sense and is money well spent - as long as once I start downloading it is easy and quick. Still I won't know till I try.

Just to say thanks to DigiatlJunkie. I don't always get sensible replies from forums - especially when I'm a newbie.

1st enable encryption- it prevents isp throttling
2nd disable the 3rd firewall while downloading (theres one in the router)
3rd I say its your router (you have bypass the router to check for speed difference?)
4th I had belkin itsucks, I suggest reset belkin, go to belk homepage and reopen the port.
