Vote Dammit!! Nov. 5th - November 4th, 2002, 02:37 PM

November 5th is election day in the US and, wheter you know it or not, the people that you vote for are the people that help to influence the laws in this country! It is an amazing revelation I am sure, but it is the truth (would I steer you wrong?). The future of P2P is influenced by who you vote for and how those people vote for you. Do you want somebody that disagrees with your fringe values voting for you? Hell NO!!! Vote against these people.

Every person over the age of eighteen should vote. If you don't know who to vote for, only vote for the things that you understand... nobody is forcing you to vote for choices you don't understand or don't care about.

Sometimes, I just go out to vote to voice my disapproval, how else is anyone going to realize that there are dissenters if the people that disagree don't vote.

You can go online to your city or state's website and research who you want to vote for in no time flat (c'mon--P2P users are known for being able to find what they are looking for faster than anyone else and find the verified information).

If you aren't registered, you can pick up a form online, or at the DOL in your area.

Just remember, if you don't vote, you lose your voice in government and eventually may end up with less rights than before.

As much as i would like to believe that everyone should vote, most people really dont care. Let me put it this way, If you pay taxes, and were offered an entire refund on your income taxes, would you give up your vote? I think almost every single person would. Most people honestly dont care about it.

This argument is not logical - November 4th, 2002, 03:19 PM

Apathy is not an excuse not to vote. Most people don't have to go out of their way to vote--the polls are open early and close at about 8pm in most places.

It just takes five minutes and you are helping to represent what you believe in... how often do people in office hear from you? This is your chance.

Plus, in most areas there are all sorts of referendums being voted on as well, so if you don't vote, you may have to pay more taxes, or something that you want may be defeated.

If all people that think the same way as yourself were not to vote, you will not be represented at all. You must combat the "slippery slope" and express your thoughts, because if you don't, maybe somebody else won't as well and eventually your belief is disregarded since it is not even seen.

One vote does count!!!!

ADOLF HITLER was voted the head of the German National Socialist Party in 1923... No shit. Just look at what can happen if you don't stand up and represent.

Who is to say that your internet freedom won't be infringed? Or your file-sharing?

I agree with wingnut2600. Not voting because you "don't care" and encouraging others to not vote because it really doen't do anything is pure idiocy.

I registered to vote too late so now I cannot participate in any elections that are closing in.. but I will be ready for the next one. (I'm kind of lazy... I haven't even registered for the draft yet :-/)

Absentee Ballot - November 4th, 2002, 04:46 PM

What my wife and I do is get absentee ballots sent to us. This way, we can see what is on the ballot before we get to the polls (those bastards always try to throw just one more poorly-worded item on the ballot). Then I can research the voting a bit and not feel pressured to vote incorrectly.

if you are out of the area on voting day, you can drop your ballot in a post office box and still be counted (plus you can see the effect of your ballot in really close races where they have to wait to count the absentees).

Also, you can still drop your ballot off where you vote, without having to wait in line (yeah right, you almost never have to wait in line).

When you register to vote you can check a box to request an ongoing absentee ballot, or you can call you local elections office for a one-time absentee (people bad-mouth government officials, but they are usually very nice and helpful albeit slow).

Here is a site that you can find out how to register:

https://ssl.capwiz.com/congressorg/nvra/

Here is the Federal Government's site:

http://www.fec.gov/votregis/vr.htm

Be ready for next year and REGISTER EARLY!!!

Question ONE THING TO REMEMBER - November 4th, 2002, 04:57 PM

Those who run for office are just like you and me !

They were not born with the skills to be leaders or:
to be anything special !!!!!!!!

However, they do know how to get elected or re-elected !!

This is the only special skill they have.........................

Just get informed, be informed and vote accordingly...

Its your Country !!!!!!! :mellow

Thumbs up November 4th, 2002, 05:17 PM

Although our choices may seem very limited I do agree that we need to vote. I will vote no matter how repugnant my choices are.

May you always run with the wind at your back and good friends by your side.

:shy Although I am a Canadian I share the view that the right to vote is a precious thing. Wars have been fought for this right. For the people that think my vote will never count, how do you know. All I can tell you is that if you dont vote it damm well wont count. We all seem to have enough opinions on here, why not take them to the ballet box? PS Canucks do have tempers.
