Well, I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your specific problem, but one thing I would recommend is that you stop using iTunes. The software is crap (in my not-so-humble opinion :icon_tong ). Just the fact that it forces you to install Quicktime is in itself reason enough not to use it (why the hell do you need Quicktime to manage your audio library?).
Try using WinAmp with the iPod plugin.
Familiar interface...good media library....excellent play list support.
Only bad thing is that AOL bought out WinAmp and who knoww what they've done with it. Still better than iTunes and Quicktime, though...
