Why do you still talk about the RIAA - October 21st, 2002, 12:33 PM

It seems alot of people here are still worried about the RIAA. Even though half of you won't admit it. There has been rumors that they are going to try to shut down FastTrack (That means Kazaa-Kazaa lite) Why should we worry about that? If they do shut down Kazaa lite Then it will be just like Napster and more programs like Shareaza,Ares, winmx will have a chance to get better becouse there will be a race to see what one is better. Kazaa lite right now is the best program out there so if that goes down then more programs have a chance to get better. So we should not worry about anything. What is your thoughts on the RIAA???

i hope to god that the riaa doesnt shut down FT. for most people with this opinion its because its a great program and they dont want to be without it. im the same way, but i have a second reason: there are a few progs that are slowly but surely becoming mainstream. they have enough capacity now, but should FT go down, 100,000,000 peeps are going to look for somthing else to use. where are they all going to go? to the progs that are already established. progs like winmx, blubster, gnutella and edonkey/emule. these progs might not be able to handle soo many peeps. so then, more progs could crash. not good. if kazaa has to go, which it eventually will, i hope it is slowly faded out in favor for other, better programs.

Half of us won't admit that the RIAA wants to shut down FastTrack? Where did you get that notion. It's a well known fact that the RIAA has been trying to shut down the FastTrack network for a while now and has filed law suits against the owners etc.

Thanks for the heads up Joe Mama! I had no idea that the RIAA is in a class-action lawsuit against all people involved with Kazaa. By the way, everything centralized will eventually be shut down as soon as it catches the eye of the money-hungry conglomerate (unless they can't find the people that can shut it down). I personally do not find this fact to be a good thing for smaller companies. If Kazaa is brought down, the RIAA will just shift its focus to aim on one or all of these smaller apps.

By the way, it sounds like what you actually want is a grudge match between applications seeing who is the toughest and survives in the "steel-cage of death." All of these programs have their own place and have more opportunities for advancement when they are competing versus each other (i.e. the advancements brought to Gnutella when Shareza came on the scene).

Less is never better. Just look at the paucity of viable choices for OS's. If there were more competition, MS would probably not put out such a vulnerable/buggy program since they know that they are the de facto choice.

The RIAA has no real effect on P2p since P2p users are tenacious and strive to overcome hurdles put before them, but they can slow advancement and annihilate good programs (i.e. my beloved AudioGalaxy--Why God? Why!!!).

The assumption that if the riaa shuts down one program then people will just use another is a assumption which should not be relied on just like its stupid to expect some mysterious unknown cracker to crack any drm scheme or protections.. The whole idea that file sharing can survive in the "underground" is nonsense.. Just as much nonsense as people who think this is only about money. Its not about money its about control..

If you want a high post count then use your other name instead of doing the old posting a bunch of polls trick..

If Fasttrack was stopped.. trust me.. besides myself, there are at least a thousand other coders ready to do something about it. P2P will never die... I alone could promise that .. but with the hundreds, thousands!?!!!... of developers out there.. The RIAA is little more than a nuisance. Seriously.

Hate to drop a bomb here.. but FXP boards (especially) and Hotline, etc.. all still survive as the proverbial underground.

The only thing that makes p2p projects 'overground' is the fact that the developers get greedy, want banners and make a business out of things. Well, that's my reckoning i guess!! :\

Those really arent File sharing networks. As i said before this isnt about money, its about control. I dont think it matters if a person wants to make a dime or not. Also im sure you are aware that P2P has far more applications than just file sharing. Its also because of p2p companies that file sharing and p2p has gotten as popular as it has, that it even existed, the reason why it exists today and are needed for it to exist in the future. Why users want to harm both sides the media companies and the p2p companies is beyond me in this war of fools because in the end everyone loses.

Yodashady.. You have been complain almost non stop of these "other people" and ive looked into it time after time again and with every one, nothing. Im sick of going on a wild goose chases because of you crying wolf so many times and even causing problems over nothing. So Im just going to ignore all complaints by you unless theres links.

btw others dont post polls in bulk at least your doing them in the right forums now.. now only if the newbies could post in the right forums..

Don't care personally. There's always be IRC and Newgroups, if everything else is shut down. The bigger concern is if ISP's start monitoring all web traffic.
