some 3.1 problems - May 18th, 2002, 02:04 AM

I've just updated to 3.1 from 2.6 and I've run into a couple of problems. Firstly, I can't get my old incomplete downloads to switch to auto-complete. I've tried clicking auto-retry, but nothing happens.
Secondly, my download speeds are unbeleivably slow. I have a DSL connection with a firewall. I'm on a secondary connection and I've limited the upload speed, but currently I'm downloading from a cable at <400b/s.

I can give some tips on your dl speed. Try tweaking the throttle bandwidth (setup>throttle bandwidth>upload rate). You want play with you upload speed and limit it. THe number you want is compter dependent, and you have change numbers until you notice that total dls always over take your total uploads. For DSL (i have cable) I would start around 25000 try increaseing and decreasing and find the magic number for you system.

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".

One thing to remember when D/L ing from a cable user is that not all cable service is the same, some cable users still run on a system that has a generous pipe down but their upload is confined to 56k due to having a phone line out, Cox cable is notorious for still having this archaic system in place, with promises of upgrading "soon" - also if you can find a file that is multi-sourced you should have plenty of bandwidth available.

Have you tried using a Primary Connection? Most Firewalls are configurable; with ZoneAlarm you only have to give WinMX server rights and it does not even see the Firewall.
