Do the earphones/headphones/earbuds/whatever they are work in anything else? It sounds like a problem with the mini's plug connection thingie.

Then it's more than likely a problem with the ipod's headphone jack.

I don't know how to fix it.

Talk to your local Apple store!
(the guy that was helping me at the MOA apple store was weird as hell)

If it is still under warranty I would see about getting another one.

He's right, if youre ipod is still under waranty, defenetely get it exchanged. It's even better if you have an apple store near you. Just walk in, show them your problem, and you should be walking out with a new iPod.

Once I built a new PC and was hooking up the external case Firewire ports to my motherboard. And I think they forgot to translate the instructions from Korean for that part of the manual. So I fucked with it for like 30 minutes and then said, what the hell, I'll "freestyle" the connection.

Next thing I know, I fry my iPod. I could charge it, but could not connect it as a drive. So I went into the apple store, told them it "just stopped working" and acted surprised, and they gave me a brand new iPod. So it was easier than I thought.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...onics&v=glance

These are the headphones I use. Pretty good, have an inline volume control, and last a while.

Oh, and if youre going for the larger headphones, these:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...onics&v=glance
are some of the best ones you can get for that price. Theyre cup your ear, are a closed design(so they can eliminate some sound from the outside), and for that price, theyre performance is amazing. Not to mention theyre comfortable as hell.

Is it a headphone problem or an ipod problem? I think it's an ipod problem...

yeah... Its definately a problem with the iPod if the supposedly bad headphones work fine in several other devices. I'm thinking that a connection is either broken or short circuiting in the iPod, but regardless of what it is, you should have apple fix it - especially if its under warranty.

you can try cleaning out the headphone jack with some rubbing alcohol soaked cotton swabs, just make sure theyre relatively dry before u, um....stick it in.

It's called cold solder joints. The points at where the headphone jack is soldered onto the board inside of the ipod is done with the board being cold, making the joints very brittle. It's also not supported by anything EXCEPT those joints. When the headphone jack is moved over use and time by pulling on the headphone cord, dropping the iPod and having the cold fly out, and even everyday wear and tear, these joints break, and cause limited conntectivity. It's an easy fix with a soldering iron, but considering how much iPods cost, and doing that would void your warranty, try to replace it with your warranty.

sometimes in the headphone jack the connecter can shock the head phones and cause a power surge...thus short ceircuting your headphones, yeah if its still under warrenty might as well get a new one and not bother with getting it fixed.

**The same thing happened to my friend
